For the second year, WAM has teamed up with Sally Jablonski of Herbert E. Berg Florist to create the decorations for our holiday celebration, Deck the Halls. Aileen Novick, our Manager of Public and Education Programs, asked Sally about one of 2020's most special trees: the Hero Tree.
“I really wanted to highlight the people who have been heroes of this pandemic. With the tree, we were looking for the attributes of heroes and not trying to find ornaments that would only represent a few types of heroes, as we didn’t want to leave anyone out. While I was researching ornaments, I found these Kitras Art Glass Tree of Enchantment ornaments. They note that like trees in a forest, no two ornaments are exactly alike. Each glass ornament that I selected represents a different personal quality or trait of a hero. We have over 20 heroic attributes represented from courage to wisdom to positivity and remembrance."
As always, Sally has worked with the local community to make these trees as uniquely "Worcester" as possible.
"The Museum reached out to community and partners like the Worcester Head Start Program, the TEC School and other students in Worcester and asked them to create an ornament that represented someone who was a hero of the pandemic to them. All of these ornaments had to go on the Upside Down Tree, as that is the tree that most represents this year!”
While the students weren't all able to visit their trees in person, three of Head Start's art teachers recently visited to create videos of the Hero Tree and its ornaments to show their students.

For the second year, WAM has partnered with Sally Jablonski of Herbert E. Berg Florist to create the decorations for our holiday celebration, Deck the Halls. Aileen Novick, our Manager of Public and Education Programs, asked Sally about her personal favorite decoration this year: the Music Trees.
“The inspiration for the Music Trees was the fact that we haven’t been able to have live music in 2020. Usually WAM hosts large concerts at this time of year and I was thinking of people missing the music. These trees became very personal to me. The origami music ornaments are my favorite."
But it's more than just the missed concerts; Sally also has a personal connection to these decorations.
"They were made out of copies of sheet music from the collections of Herbert E. Berg and my Dad. Mr. Berg played the drums and kept the piano music from his aunt. Many of the piano scores we used were from that collection. My Dad played the accordion and had a subscription for the sheet music magazines we also used here. I like that young studio assistants from WAM created the origami for the tree using this music."
WAM's studio assistants, Jane and Marta, folded all of the origami ornaments; this is part of our tradition of gathering decorations for the Deck the Halls trees from the community where possible.
"The ornaments of the metal notes were made by Tony Bondi in Clinton, MA. He has been my son’s music teacher and so those are really special to me. I also really like the element of the black ribbon on the music trees. It adds a nice definition.”
The Music Trees will be on display through January 3, 2021. Come by and check them out!

WAM Decks the Halls!
Sally Jablonski of Herbert E. Berg Florist has been hard at work decorating six trees throughout the galleries of the Worcester Art Museum - including a Wine Tree, a pair of Music Trees featuring origami ornaments folded from sheet music, and a Worcester Heroes Tree with ornaments made by students of The TEC Schools Think Explore Create and Head Start Worcester.
