What a great talk today, Ciscoe- thank you! We took the following notes on some of the top gardening tips you shared: • Best plants to grow inside in a sunny window: Jade, you GOTTA grow African Violets (they bloom and bloom non-stop), Christmas Cactus (easiest to grow, will make you look like a master gardener), Phalaenopsis orchid (great holiday gift to give because they only need watering every other week and the blooms last about 3 months) • Best fertilizer for Dahlias: alfalfa meal- has great micronutrients and leads to bigger, more colorful blooms • Queen of the Night Tulips and Empress Tulips: the main problem with most tulips is that they usually don’t bloom more than once, but he has the best luck with these particular tulips in getting them to bloom multiple times. Plant the bulbs 12” deep so the squirrels don’t get them. • Crocus: squirrels love Crocus bulbs, and since you can’t plant them 12” deep, chicken wire is suggested, but even then the squirrels sometimes pull that up. Even better, sprinkle hot pepper flakes around them- the hottest ones you can find- works for tulips too. • What to do if soil test shows low on Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium: use an organic (vs synthetic) fertilizer. Any nursery can help you find a good all-purpose organic fertilizer. If growing food, then you’d want to use a bloom fertilizer. • Best mulch for ornamental gardens: wood chips because they help to avoid plant disease and they break down after a year and turn into the best top soil. • Biggest tip for growing peonies which are tough to grow: #1 tip is to not plant too deep (the bulb tip should be at soil surface). Also, make sure they have full sun and no crowding and give them alfalfa meal and organic fertilizer 1 time per year. • Aphids covered our cabbage and artichokes, tried spraying with soapy water, didn't seem to do much, other suggestions? Take a hose and put it on the shower setting and shower the plant till you blow the aphids off. It works like a charm. But, every little aphid already has a cluster of live young inside it, and those live young have their own cluster of live young- like the Russian dolls. So, you have to do this operation 3 days apart 3 different times. It works every time. • My rosemary plant is really old and huge. Can I divide it or take a cutting and start a new one? You can’t divide a rosemary plant the traditional way- from a cut. But, you can split a branch and bend it down and stick the tip into the soil and put a rock over it. It will create a new start that you can then move.

With what appears to be a split congress (GOP Senate and Dem House), it's tough to say how much of Biden's tax plans may get passed next year. That said, we can still take advantage of the current tax rates, which are historically low, and on Fri Nov 13 we're hosting a workshop on the Top 12 Year-End Tax Strategies. Given the US's record levels of debt, taxes are almost certain to go up over time, making these strategies particularly important over the final 6 weeks of this year.
