New Trane system at a house in Olde Stone Way today
Finding old stuff is always a thrill. I’ve heard of these wooded water mains but I’ve never actually seen one.

Dr. Siegel busts myth that COVID-19 can survive in high temperatures
Governor Wolf has wisely recommended social distancing, closed schools & many businesses... to slow the spread of Covid-19 and the vast majority of people I’ve seen are cooperating. He has also widely recognized that the repair and maintenance of your dwelling is essential and has specifically permitted that service.
At Hess Mechanical, we have continued to serve our customers as they have needs. We’ve been wearing masks, gloves, and shoe covers to protect ourselves and you the customer.
Things have certainly been a little slow but as the crisis lessens, there is no doubt that there will be a backlog of work and with warmer weather coming, that is a concern.
We will be starting to schedule air conditioning maintenance as temperatures rise into the beginning of May. I urge you to schedule that work sooner rather than later.
President Trump yesterday extended the recommendation in social distancing and today, Governor Wolf also extended and expanded the school and business closures. We are cooperating with these recommendations and are limiting our services to emergencies and true essentials.
With sub-freezing temps in the forecast, it’s time to remove the hose from your outside hose hydrants to prevent damage over the winter.
So, can you find the oil fill pipes once they’re covered with snow?
A stake or flag now might be the difference between getting oil when you need it or getting cold when the driver can’t find the fill.
Got a heat pump? Once the outside unit is covered by snow, they are all but useless.
If it happens, go to your thermostat and switch it to “Emergency Heat” until you can clear the snow from around the outdoor unit. This will maintain the thermostat setpoint using the electric resistance or fossil fuel backup heater.
If it’s filled inside with snow, you may need to have the top removed by a professional to get it cleaned out.
Once it’s cleaned, the unit should be able to operate normally again.
When installing a direct vent heating appliance, the instructions say to put the vent above anticipated snowfall.
Since this event may be higher than what most people would consider “anticipated” for our area, you may need to expose the vent pipes of your water heater or furnace to keep them working.
If they do become covered and you find yourself without heat, turn off the power to the appliance, clear the vents, turn the power back on and the appliance should re-light automatically
I realize that not everyone gets a thrill out of old mechanicals but look at that date and the phone number.
I'll let Shawn know what you said and then remind him of how recently he got a raise. Thanks for the review and compliments.
