I envy those who can compose eloquent heartfelt posts. This might get a little long and rambling... (you've been warned)
In the early months of 2020 I felt like we had finally "found our groove" at HilI's. I may have even said it out loud.
We had plans for this year like everyone. Ideas on how to expand our services to our customers and our service to the community.
But almost as quick as I had the thought, things stopped, hard, for all of us. Indoor dining, DONE. The way we had access to our customers, CHANGED. Trying to embrace and employ technology to keep in contact and stay afloat. Shortages of product and energy, physical and emotional. For awhile things seemed to change on the daily. Doing the best we could with what we had... like all of you were doing with your lives and careers.
Looking back maybe some smarter choices could have been made .... but you know the saying about "hindsight is 2020".
Through the absolute most challenging, trying and frankly terrifying year... I want to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU!!! For continuing to support us.
For being amazing to my amazing staff. For giving us, me especially, a purpose. I realize that so much of who I am revolves around what I do for a living. I thank you for giving me the opportunity. We miss your smiling faces and hope there are smiles behind your masks. We miss our breakfast crowd regulars and lunchtime counter conversations. Truly you make Hill's a special place.
Maybe I didn't learn my lesson with my 2020 plans. It seems as if at least the early part of 2021 will be a little off plan as well.
I've been dealing with some personal issues and unfortunately they don't seem to want to follow my plan. Because things have happened so recently and I haven't had time to adjust to my new hopefully short lived reality, I'm not going to make any plans beyond next week. We were set to reopen on January 5th. In good conscience and what I hope is a good business decision we will be delaying our reopening one week. We will keep you posted. Please know this was not an easy decision but conserving resources right now seems to be the best solution. Believe me, as soon as we know something we will do our best to make sure you know it too.
I have to admit I was much more excited about 2021 up until a few weeks ago.
From the bottom of my heart I thank you for being the kind of customers who feel like friends and family.
And to the people I work with , Caroline Elizabeth, Max Mckewen, Max Szczukowski and James Petrides....
I could not ask for a better team. ❤️

Because things have happened so recently and I haven't had time to adjust to my new hopefully short lived reality, I'm not going to make any plans beyond next week. We were set to reopen on January 5th. In good conscience and what I hope is a good business decision we will be delaying our reopening one week. We will keep you posted. Please know this was not an easy decision but conserving resources right now seems to be the best solution. Believe me, as soon as we know something we will do our best to make sure you know it too.
I have to admit I was much more excited about 2021 up until a few weeks ago.

I envy those who can compose eloquent heartfelt posts. This might get a little long and rambling... (you've been warned)
In the early months of 2020 I felt like we had finally "found our groove" at HilI's. I may have even said it out loud.
We had plans for this year like everyone. Ideas on how to expand our services to our customers and our service to the community.
But almost as quick as I had the thought, things stopped, hard, for all of us. Indoor dining, DONE. The way we had access to our customers, CHANGED. Trying to embrace and employ technology to keep in contact and stay afloat. Shortages of product and energy, physical and emotional. For awhile things seemed to change on the daily. Doing the best we could with what we had... like all of you were doing with your lives and careers.
Looking back maybe some smarter choices could have been made .... but you know the saying about "hindsight is 2020".
Through the absolute most challenging, trying and frankly terrifying year... I want to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU!!! For continuing to support us.
For being amazing to my amazing staff. For giving us, me especially, a purpose. I realize that so much of who I am revolves around what I do for a living. I thank you for giving me the opportunity. We miss your smiling faces and hope there are smiles behind your masks. We miss our breakfast crowd regulars and lunchtime counter conversations. Truly you make Hill's a special place.
Maybe I didn't learn my lesson with my 2020 plans. It seems as if at least the early part of 2021 will be a little off plan as well.
I've been dealing with some personal issues and unfortunately they don't seem to want to follow my plan. Wow what a week on the farm. Not very often to I take the time to grab a camera when S*** starts hitting the fan but this week I made a point to capture some of the other side of raising livestock. Not the glamorous side but the realistic side. Wednesday morning one of our beautiful ewes gave birth to Jack. He is a huge lamb and in the process of giving birth to this baby ram the size of a 3 week old (we like small lambs) she pushed her entire uterus out. We attempted to put it back in place twice and stitched her to keep it in place. In the end our ettempts were unsuccessful and we decided it was the humane thing to do to end her life. Thursday morning my neighbors cow went into labor, it was not progressing like it should have and we went in to check things out. After going in we suspected the calf was dead and not presenting correctly. We tried for a long time to position calf but once again we were unsuccessful, the vet was able to come later in the day and confirm our thoughts and the cow was humanely euthanized. I am not looking for sympathy, we chose this life and we work hard to learn from all of our experiences. Maybe we will be successful the next time and we have been before. We love what we do, but emergencies happen and usually on days with the worst weather.
These animals were loved and treated well and I know we did our best. In the end we have a bottle baby lamb Jack. He will be a ambassador for the farm. We will make sure that he is tame and that kids can interact with him. Who knows, maybe he will inspire someone to go down this crazy road of farming in their future. There are so many good days compared to the few bad. Thank you to everyone who supports our small farm. We really appreciate ewe.
