In 1891, William Morrison, who was an American inventor, built the first ever successful car driven by electricity.
One of the most famous experiments done by Benjamin Franklin was the kite experiment. He attached a long wire to a kite made of silk. He used it to draw electricity from storm clouds and charge a Leyden Jar. Through his experiments, he proved that storm clouds carried electricity and lightning was nothing but a heavily charged spark of electricity. This was a path breaking discovery of his times because in those days thunderstorms and lightning strikes cause widespread damage to wooden structures.
Electricity was discovered around 1600 AD by an English scientist known as William Gilbert. William Gilbert was also the one who coined the word electricity.

The nation’s first commercial electrical plant began operation in Appleton, WI in 1882. Banker and a paper company executive Henry J. Rogers, who moved to Wisconsin in 1873, wanted to introduce electric power to his factory and home. With hardware supplied by the Edison Company, his plant began transmitting power to local paper mills, the water company and some of the cities wealthiest families in the summer of 1882.
Most of the inventions in electricity we use today, such as fuses, meters, switches and more, all came from Thomas Edison. He came up with over 2000 inventions.

On his 59th birthday, in 1906, Nikola Tesla demonstrated a 200 horsepower (150 kilowatts) 16,000 rpm bladeless turbine. During 1910-1911, at the Waterside Power Station in New York, several of his bladeless turbine engines were tested at 100-5,000 hp. Tesla worked with several companies including from 1919 to 1922 in Milwaukee, for Allis-Chalmers. He spent most of his time trying to perfect the Tesla turbine with Hans Dahlstrand, the head engineer at the company, but engineering difficulties meant it was never made into a practical device. Tesla did license the idea to a precision instrument company and it found use in the form of luxury car speedometers and other instruments.
Sir Joseph Wilson Swan (1828 - 1914) was an English physicist, chemist and inventor. Early experiments at his home, Underhill, Low Fell, Gateshead, led to him inventing the first electric light bulb. Underhill was the first house in the world to be wired for domestic electric lighting.
