As I researched “things to do” while preparing for a family trip to a forest campground, I found several golf courses and a nearby river where the salmon were running. So I stowed a set of clubs and some fishing gear in a borrowed motorhome. As it turned out, the fishing stream was right next to our campground, so, with no experience catching salmon, I headed down to the river bank. But I only had a pair of tennis shoes and my golf shoes. Well, golf shoes are waterproof, right? Yeah, little did I know that once I hooked a fish, I would have to wade into the water up to my waist to bring it in. So much for keeping my feet dry. That was ages ago. Should You Use Nitrogen To Fill Your Tires?
Several years ago, new car dealerships and tire retailers began a practice that was purported to prevent air loss in tires, boost fuel efficiency, reduce rolling resistance, and improve vehicle safety. Cars, trucks, and SUVs rolled out of dealer lots and tire shops with little green valve stem caps on their wheels to signify that the tires were filled with nitrogen instead of regular old air.
Those little green caps came with a cost. Anywhere from about thirty bucks per tire on the cheap side to empty out the old air and replace it with nitrogen to several hundred when included as part of an options package on a new vehicle. But is the benefit worth the price?
