Edge of the Cedars State Park Museum

Small foot, large foot. Shown here are two plaited yucca sandals from our BLM collections. The sandal on the left is probably for a child, while the adult version is on the right. The sandals come from the same place, an alcove site from one of the canyons that incise Cedar Mesa (west of Bluff, Utah). It is likely that the sandals date between the late AD 1000s and late 1200s; however, it is possible that they may date to the AD 600s. (Given that Cedar Mesa harbors very little that dates between AD 700 and 1050, it's unlikely that the sandals derive from this middling span of time.)

Update: Spruce Tree House, next to the museum, is still closed. The alcove that cradles the site is just not stable enough and may not be until late 2019. Luckily, however, a great viewpoint is still easily accessible just 200 ft. from the museum. So bring your camera and a friend. If you plan on continuing down that trail to Petroglyph Point please don’t forget to bring water.💧Its getting toasty out there.☀️🔥 (AV)

Have you heard about the tunnel visitors squeeze through on the Balcony House tour and have you wondered if you'll fit? Turns out, there's an app for that!
Thanks to Ranger Doug and Ranger Bailey, we have a frame beautifully painted with Mesa Verde motifs that is exactly the size of the tunnel. Try it on for size before you go!

The park weather is changing this week as we move into our mid-summer monsoon season. This time of year thunderstorms are likely in the afternoon and evening but may occur at any time of day. Come prepared with a raincoat and know that tours may be cancelled if there is lightning, hail or other dangerous weather in the area. If your tour is cancelled due to weather the interpretive ranger can help with options for a refund or rescheduled tour. While the weather may cause some inconveniences, it can also create amazing photo opportunities, as Ranger Nielsen discovered earlier this week. crl

There are a multitude of ways to enjoy your visit at Mesa Verde National Park. If strenuous hiking, climbing ladders, and crawling through small tunnels to visit a cliff dwelling is not appropriate or appealing for you, there are plenty of options as to how to spend your time in the park. Observe the beauty of the wildflowers at scenic overlooks, listen to the soundscape while having a picnic, cool off and watch the film at the Chapin Mesa Museum, or drive the Mesa Top Loop Road, which is the most accessible of all the archaeological sites in Mesa Verde National Park.

Photography can be a wonderful way of experiencing a cliff dwelling. The eye is drawn to architectural details and notices colors, textures and the play of light on stone.
Always remember to keep an eye on your surroundings though while on a tour and be situationally aware. The footing is often uneven and the opportunities for trips and falls are plentiful.
Have you taken any great photos while on a tour at Mesa Verde? We'd love to see them. (ls)
