But when a client can go from barely standing up to walking laps around the house, it's a special moment for all. And it's just another small way that our caregivers support every aspect of their clients' lives.

The HCA team is particularly good at noticing when things don't seem quite right with a client. Sometimes it can be a very subtle change, like when someone with decent mobility isn't moving quite as well as usual. Or a client appears to have discomfort when moving or walking. Our caregivers know what changes are significant and which warning signs to watch for. Thanks to their training, skills and compassion, they often notice things others may not catch and can prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones. It's one of the many things that makes them so special.

Our caregivers are particularly gifted at finding ways to connect with their clients. This is especially important at the beginning of the relationship, when everything is new and change can feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it's the smallest connection that forms a lasting bond, such as a shared love of a favorite color. One member of our Care Team arrived to meet her new client wearing gleaming, bright yellow shoes on her feet. Her new client loved her shoes and their mutual love of yellow was the perfect icebreaker. We're so grateful for all the many ways, big and small, that our caregivers and staff bring brightness to the lives of our clients. #attitudeofgratitude #homecare

Helping your elderly loved ones stay safe during the pandemic isn't always easy, particularly when they live alone or far away. It becomes even more complex when memory issues are involved and the risk of infection varies from month to month. Here are a few questions that can start conversations with mom and dad and help keep them as safe as possible: 1. How was your day/week? This question can shed light on how careful they're being day-to-day. 2. When is your next doctor's appointment? This can identify which appointments to keep versus reschedule and attend in person versus telehealth. Encourage them to ask their PCP if they are uncertain. 3. How are your spirits? How can I help? The road to staying safe is difficult, especially for those who are most vulnerable and isolated. Sometimes the smallest of things can brighten someone's day. We're in this together and we'll get through it together!

Did you know that Home Care Assistance takes a unique approach to caregiving called the Balanced Care Method? BCM is based on studies of elders in Okinawa, Japan, who often live to be 100 or older with excellent health. Researchers found that two-thirds of longevity is due to specific lifestyle factors, including healthy diet, physical activity, cognitive engagement, social ties and calmness/purpose. Our caregivers incorporate all these components when working with clients to help them have the longest and healthiest life possible. It's one of the many things that sets us apart from your average care providers.

One question families often ask themselves is, "Can we afford home care?" While we can't necessarily answer the question for you, we can provide some useful information. If you are expecting to private pay for care, in general, home care tends to cost significantly less than nursing home care. It's worth comparing the cost of all options as well as the pros and cons of each. If your loved one has long term care insurance, check to see if the policy covers home care. You may also want to look into the tax implications of home care and how any potential tax deductions can help offset the cost. Give us a call at (402) 261-5158 if we can answer any specific questions. We're here to help you make the right decision for you and your family.

Have we mentioned we have ❄️SNOW ANGELS❄️ at Home Care Assistance? Last week when Nebraska was hit with the biggest snowstorm since the 90’s, we had an amazing crew of people devoted to making sure our caregivers made it to their clients’ homes safe and sound despite the weather. Logging over 800 miles last week, these individuals could be seen all over Lincoln driving caregivers to scheduled shifts, digging out cars that have gotten stuck in the snow and making sure caregivers arrived to work safely. On behalf of all of HCA, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Jeremy, Melanie, Terrell and Carrie for braving the storm to assure caregivers and clients remained safe and sound! 🤗

BEING COVID CAREFUL: Staying safe during the pandemic requires constant assessment of the ever-changing environment and guidelines to make the best decisions at any given moment. Your seniors may need help with making these complex decisions. Let's say, for example, your mother scheduled an annual dermatology appointment a year ago. Because it's on her calendar, she may automatically assume she should keep the appointment. But should she? You may want to recommend that she check with her doctor's office several days ahead. This way, her provider can determine if the benefits of the appointment outweigh the risks. Sometimes the best interim option is a telehealth appointment, for example. TIP: It's important to remember that cancelling an annual exam doesn't mean skipping a year. In most instances, it's better to reschedule for several months out and call again in advance to determine if the new time is the best time to be seen.

"Our mother was suffering with Alzheimer's, had a fall at home, a subsequent hospital admission, and after a week in rehab, she was discharged home. A few days later she was diagnosed with COVID. The home caregivers that we had previously contracted with pulled out leaving Mom alone with the nearest child six hours drive away. That's when Home Care Assistance stepped in for our family. They were extraordinary in their willingness to help and to arrange care for my Mom even under the difficult circumstance. We would, without reserve recommend them for anyone seeking in home care for their loved one." Cathy B.
It turns out that, as we age, the old adage "you are what you eat" takes on even more meaning. Based on studies of the longest-living population in the world, we know more about the relationship between a healthy diet and lasting health than ever before. This Modified MyPyramid for Older Adults illustrates the dietary guidelines we recommend for our clients. One of the best things about aging? Wisdom! While people often associate aging with a decline in mental acuity, according this recent article from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there are positive benefits too. Seniors are more likely to have robust vocabularies as well as more knowledge and experience to draw on to solve problems. They are often better able to handle the ups and downs of life and understand differing points of view. Because of these upsides, may seniors even describe their later years as some of the happiest ones of their life.
CONGRATULATIONS Jay and Kristen on winning today’s drawing!!🎉🎊 Todays theme for the drawing was ‘Timely Tuesday’ and all caregivers who have had 2 or less call offs in the last 6 months were entered into the drawing. When you are caring for a loved one, one of the most important ways to maintain your mental and physical health is getting enough sleep. During sleep, the body and brain repair themselves, strengthening the immune system—which has close ties to mental health—bolstering the stress response, and recharging the systems that help regulate emotions, consolidate memories and thoughts, focus, and connect to others. While getting to sleep and staying asleep may seem hard to do, the answer may not be that difficult. With some easy adjustments, you can, once again, be resting well and getting the sleep that you need. Sweet dreams! Unfortunately, it's all too common to wait until there's a crisis to make plans for a loved one, when stress levels are high and options may be more limited. Often the better approach is to assess the situation and put resources in place well before any emergency arises. Once you have a plan to follow, you'll want to revisit it as the situation changes. Have questions? Our Care Managers are here to help 24/7. Can you imagine a senior loved one in your life that is hungry or not getting the food they need, but nobody knows it? This has been called hidden hunger. A phrase that describes the problem of malnutrition in seniors. Not all food is created equal. Imagine food is like a package you receive in the mail. You pick up the box and shake it. It feels full and you are excited to see what is inside. But when you open the package all you find is packing paper, Styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap. How disappointing! Although the box was full it had nothing of value in it. A full cupboard, a full plate or even a full stomach doesn’t mean your loved one is getting enough nutrition. They are also highly skilled at building relationships with their new clients. If you are a primary caregiver to your loved one, it's equally if not more important to take care of yourself too. This can be hard to do with so many demands on your time. Sometimes it helps if you think about self care as something you're doing for your loved ones. After all, if you don't have enough gas in your tank, how are you going to be able to fuel the needs of others? Better self-care doesn't always mean elaborate spa weekends. A small change in your self-care routine can even make a big difference, like adding a morning walk, exercise routine or hot cup of tea at a certain time. For more tips on taking good care of yourself, check out our blog on the importance of self-care: https://homecareassistance.com/blog/ultimate-caregiver-guide-self-care
Physical activity is essential for healthy aging. Here are some easy ways to add more movement to your daily life: Take the stairs whenever possible, park a little further away from your destination so you take more steps to reach it, spend time outside gardening or watering the lawn, walk to the mailbox or do a little extra housework. In honor of National Social Worker Month, we are shining a spotlight on some of the amazing Social Workers in our community. This week, we are recognizing Ashley Murman, SW, PMSW, PMHP. Ashley is a Social Work Care Manager at Bryan Health and a Medical Social Worker for Aseracare hospice. She has spent the last seven years of her career in Lincoln working in various health care settings. Typically her work includes case management, care coordination, facilitating goals of care discussions, linking patients to community resources and discharge planning. In each of these settings, she serves as part of a greater interdisciplinary team and her role has a special emphasis on aligning people with strengths-focused practice. Ashley feels social work has allowed her to pursue a career helping patients navigate health care services and secure care aimed at optimizing their quality of life. In her free time, she enjoys Lincoln's local restaurants, finding outdoor adventures and cherishes time with her family. Thank you, Ashley, for all that you do! You are making a difference for those you serve and it is an honor to know you!
