Yes, tongue tie can affect a baby's ability to bottle feed. This video shows one of the most common problems when tongue-tied babies feed on a bottle. What you see is a piston-like motion on the bottle as it pulses in and out of the baby's mouth. This happens because the tongue cannot move up and down in the baby's mouth to create true suction and instead, moves from back to front. This results in spillage/propulsion out of the sides of the baby's mouth.
This is a common complaint with pacifier use as well - the pacifier goes shooting across the room as the baby tongues it out of the mouth.
With my upcoming research project, I hope to learn more about the impact tongue tie has on bottle-feeding motions and to learn more about the movements of the tongue objectively.
