Many patients and co-workers have asked how Melody's first Ultramarathon went, check out how her hard work and dedication paid off. Congrats Melody! Give her a 👊👍💪🔥🧡 #50miles #brycecanyonultra Melody Callister Bateman is with Jacob Bateman. 20 May 2019 at 03:18 · WEEK 15 OF 15. We did it!! Our first ultra! 50.8miles! 6,850ft of climbing! 14.42min! All the hard runs in the snow, in the mud, waking up at 3am...it was all worth it! There were multiple times during the run I didn't think I was going to finish...There were many times when I wanted to just quit right there! I wouldn't have finished if it weren't for my loving, patient husband who waited for me at every aide station and chose to run through the finish line with me, even though he could have gone on without me! I wouldn't have finished if it wasn't for his encouragement and faith in me. He believed I could do it even when I didn't think I could. Im so grateful for him ❤. Im also incredibly proud of him for being so diligent when it came to his training and pushing through all the hard parts of this long, brutal run. The scenery was GORGEOUS! Especially the second 25miles, which was all single track around Bryce Canyon. There were many times I had to stop and stare. I couldn't believe where I was and what I was standing in. I felt so grateful for God and all His creations. The first 24miles were the worst for me...But after some words of encouragement, prayers of family members, and some good food, I felt great and thoroughly enjoyed miles 24-42. The BEST part was the red rock 5mi canyon loop which consisted of a TON of climbing, VERY steep descents and a lot of technical foot work. This was also the most beautiful part of the whole run! I passed 7 people on this loop, which gave me a big confidence boost! We made it to mile 38 in 8 hours! Fast forward, the last 8 miles of the run were the hardest...Our bodies were destroyed. We speed walked everything except for the descents, until miles 46-48...we basically walked those two miles. It took us about 4.30min to run 14 miles (granted there was a TON of climbing and we were dying...) Every step was excruciating. Our legs were shaking, our knees were crying...we were crying...ok, not really, but we were close! I've never been so physically and mentally exhausted at the same time! It took a lot of strength to hold myself together the last 8miles. These miles lasted FOREVER too! We kept thinking that we had finished our last climb and that the aide station was "right over this hill"...Then all of the sudden there was another, STEEPER hill! Not going to lie, I may have said a couple of bad words when I saw the mountains we had to climb. When we reached the last aide station and we knew there were only 2 miles left and that it was all a gradual decline, I let out a half-cry/ half-sigh of relief. The last two miles Jacob and I both became quite emotional. We were going to do it...we were going to make it...that is, as long as neither of us fell and broke something the last two miles! 😂 The sounds of people cheering gave Jacob and I a boost of energy and we picked up our speed, despite the sharp pains in our hips and knees. The cheering got louder and louder until we saw the finish line! Friends, family, and strangers yelled for us...then we finished. I burst into tears...I could finally let myself fall apart after holding it together for so long...but they were tears of joy! We were awarded our medals and we could finally sit. Shout out to Jimmy Thomas as he inspired us during our training and gave us a bunch of tips that helped us during our training! Shout out to Cameron Garber who helped us better understand how to take care of our bodies. (PB&J's saved us! 😂) Shout out to Colton, Angela, and Owen who met us at two checkpoints and the finish line and brought Dr Pepper and other snacks for us! Shout out to Ashley, and Spencer who volunteered at the race and put up our tent and packed the car back up for us at the end of the race when we could hardly move! Shout out to Anna who ran with us to the finish line and Nathan who covered Jacob and I with blankets because it was freezing! Special shout out to Tammy and Jeffery who pampered us. As we soaked in epsom salt baths, they made us dinner and cleaned it all up. They also made us breakfast and cleaned it all up! They carried bags for us and sent us home with a bunch of recovery food! Shout out to the rest of our friends and family who have supported us through all of our training. We are grateful for your love and prayers. We are grateful for such wonderful friends and family. We love you all!!
