Every year, DFW Child calls on local moms to share their opinion on who goes above and beyond for their family. This year, one of our patients took the time to tell them about Dr. Hattaway! He is now officially “Mom Approved,” which means that moms trust our care and want to refer us to other moms in the area. Thank you @DfwChildMagazine for Thai honor!

In 1947, Diane Hendricks made handcrafted dolls and asked her husband, Bill, to deliver them to an agency that supports children in need. When told such an agency didn’t exist, she decided they must start one. The Marines in Major Bill’s reserve unit set up collection bins outside of movie theatres in LA and collected 5,000 toys which were distributed to families in need. The following year, they created a campaign which turned their idea into a national community action program.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the Marines expect requests for toys to double. In 2019, 229,207 toys were distributed to 169,321 children in the DFW area (https://fort-worth-tx.toysfortots.org). With your help, we can meet the need and help our community give kids the Christmas they deserve. Toys are needed for all ages, tots to teens. You can drop off new, unwrapped toys at Indian Creek Dental anytime before December 15th. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

This is Dr. George F. Grant. Like Dr. Freeman, Dr. Grant was the son of former slaves. In 1870, Grant graduated with honors and was the second African American to earn a degree in dentistry. Shortly after graduation, Grant became the first African American faculty member of Harvard. He made many contributions to cleft palette procedures while working in their department of mechanical dentistry. Fun Fact: Aside from dentistry and instructing, Dr. Grant also invented the wooden golf tee! This is Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins. She became the first African American female dentist in 1890. Rollins made the career change from seamstress to dentist by working for a dentist and simultaneously studying for her entrance exams. She was accepted into University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry in 1887 (Dr. Hattaway’s alma mater… GO BLUE!) and graduated in 1890. She then relocated to Cincinnati, becoming the first African American woman to own a dental practice there. In 1895, Ida relocated to Chicago, setting yet another record as the first African American woman to own a dental practice in Chicago. As the practice of dentistry has changed and evolved over the years, African Americans have found a way to use their platform to continue breaking barriers, effecting change, and leading the charge for equality in the field of dentistry and beyond. To kick off Black History Month, let me introduce you to Dr. Robert Tanner Freeman, our nation’s first African American dentist. After rejections from 2 dental schools because of the color of his skin, this son of former slaves graduated from Harvard University’s School of Dentistry in 1869 and opened his own practice in his hometown of Washington, D.C. Because of his tenacity and determination, he achieved his goal and set the stage for future aspiring Black dentists.
