What sets my services apart from other Hypnotherapists is my philosophy. I believe Brief Therapy, bringing about change as quickly and easily as possible, rather than drawing it out without spending unnecessary time or charging the client for unneeded sessions. I would rather start the process and teach the client how to complete the changes themselves. Besides, I'd rather see their friends because it's working for them, than keep seeing and charging them.
That leads to a different approach to business. The standard practice in this field is charge by the session and usually take several sessions (in one course I took, Smoking Cessation was a 4 session process and Weight and Shape Management was recommended as a 6 session process. Can you say $75 a session? They could!) to get results that can be achieved with one or two sessions. Since I believe that change can be accomplished quickly and have had good results based on this approach, I tend to charge by the service, not the session.
Although there are exceptions, I normally charge once for the service, and will spend as many sessions as the client needs to get the results they want. Interestingly enough, this usually results in seeing the client an average of one or two times, even though there have been notable exceptions. Even though results are usually achieved with a single session, I prefer, especially with smoking cessation, to see the client at least twice. Smoking is a special case in the sense that I have a personal vendetta against the tobacco industry. I charge about the price for a carton of Marlboro ($60) for the service. Even though my method normally is effective with a single session, I like to see the client a second time to make sure it is working, and if needed I will see them as often as they need to get results. There is only the initial fee, no charge for any additional sessions.
Basically I deal with most services the same way, with the fee based on the amount of time I think will be needed. I'm still setting rates, but this will give you an idea of how I structure my services. In general I don't mind seeing clients at no added charge when I don't get the results the first time—they are paying me in a different sense, since if I failed to get the results they wanted with the first session, they help me perfect my methods. Not to mention, if it doesn't cost more to come back if it isn't working right, I'm assured of a reasonable feedback process and better reputation.
Smoking Cessation is the lowest priced service because I feel strongly about it, and I have personal reasons for promoting it. I also work with weight and shape management, pain control and self-improvement.
