What’s Next for Coronavirus Recovery Legislation in the Hands of Congress
Great news for business owners. House Bill 606 has gone to the Governor's desk, and he is expected to sign the Bill. All Ohio employers are granted qualified immunity from lawsuits alleging their action or inaction exposed someone to COVID-19. This immunity exists from the date of the governor’s state of emergency order – March 9, 2020 – and ends on Sept. 30, 2021, so Ohio businesses will have immunity from these types of lawsuits for up to an 18-month period. In addition to this general immunity coverage, Ohio’s health care providers will also have legal protections against litigation arising from care delivered in response to the coronavirus. #RiskMgr

Gov. DeWine announced this afternoon that he is asking the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) board of directors to approve another dividend this year to the tune of $5 billion in an effort to help keep businesses open and Ohioans employed. The BWC board will meet next week to consider the proposal. Dividends like this, as well as previous ones, are possible because of strong investment returns on employer premiums, a declining number of claims each year, prudent fiscal management, and employers who work hard to improve workplace safety and reduce injury claims.

New State of Ohio Grant Programs for Small Businesses with 1-25 W2 employees and Bar and Restaurant Owners
On Friday, October 23rd, Governor DeWine and the Ohio Development Services Agency announced two new COVID Relief grant programs for Ohio companies that will provide more than $162 million in grant support.
One program is focused on all small businesses with one to twenty-five employees. The other is specifically for Bars and Restaurants for Division of Liquor Control permit holders.

Applications for both programs will open on November 2, 2020 and will be on a first come, first served basis. Small business owners should work to prepare their required application information between now and the open date. #RiskMgr

I had the privilege of participating in a meeting today with the NFIB and the Lt. Governor regarding the Governor's ongoing workflow to try to keep COVID under control in Ohio. We were provided today's COVID updates from the top hospital systems in Ohio. It is frightening what may be on the horizon if we don't slow this down until a vaccination is available to the front line workers in our hospitals. We are advocating for the Governor to take a different course regarding clamping COVID down, mainly advocating he stop closing businesses and making businesses' employees COVID police. I hope we were successful. I know we have his ear. This needs to be about personal responsibility, not business responsibility.
Please be responsible. Be compassionate. Wear a mask and keep your distance from others, not for your sake, but for others' sake.
Manage this risk carefully. It is literally a life and death risk. #RiskMgr
