As part of our continued recognition and celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, ICES steps into the halls of justice. Thurgood Marshall was an American lawyer who served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from October 1967 until October 1991. Marshall was the Court's first African-American justice. Prior to his judicial service, he successfully argued several cases before the Supreme Court, including the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education.
As part of our continued recognition and celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, ICES recognizes Charles DeLesline Foster. On September 6, 1966, Mr. Foster, a young black man from Charleston, made history when he broke the color barrier to become the first African-American to join the Corps of Cadets at The Citadel. In the nearly 50 years since his graduation, his achievement represents an important milestone in the college’s history, and Foster stands as an inspiration to cadets of all colors about the importance of perseverance. https://www.facebook.com/TheCitadel/videos/3114757865215248/ The Citadel February 14 at 1:21 PM · At this afternoon's parade, we'll celebrate the legacy of Charles Foster. As part of our continued recognition and celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, ICES heads North to the Arctic. Matthew Henson, the first African-American Arctic explorer, was navigator, craftsman and 'first man' to the famed Robert Peary. They traveled together on seven voyages over twenty-three years, and Henson planted the American flag at the North Pole in 1909. Late in his life, Henson received some long-overdue honors: he was admitted to the prestigious Explorers Club in 1937, Congress awarded him the Peary Polar Expedition Medal in 1944, and Presidents Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower welcomed him to the White House. In 1988 he was reinterred along with his wife at Arlington National Cemetery.
As part of our continued recognition and celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, ICES hits the hardwood today. Earl Lloyd, a graduate of West Virginia State University, was the first African-American man to play a game in the #NBA in 1950 for the Washington Capitols. While he was one of three African-American players drafted in 1950, it was the sequence of game openers that lead to him being the first of the three to play in a game. He went on to a nine-year career including one NBA championship, despite being drafted and serving in the Korean War. #basketball
