On June 19, 1865 Union Army General Gordon Granger announced that all enslaved persons in Texas were finally free. β
β
Although the Emancipation Proclamation officially ended slavery two and half years earlier in September 1862, Texas was the final hold out as the most remote of the slave states.
β
For many, June 19th became the unofficial true end to slavery in the United States.β
β
June 19th has since been celebrated as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and more recently in this century as Juneteenth, which is now recognized in 47 states as a state holiday or special day of observance. Activists, like 93 year-old Opal Lee, are currently campaigning to the United States Congress to make Juneteenth a national holiday. β€οΈππ»
