Did you know that 34 years ago today, the best birdwatching in the city was at The Barclay?
Although not part of the original 1920s décor, the hotel team was reluctant to part with the iconic lobby birdcage during the 1986 redesign because it had evolved into one of New York's most popular meeting spots. It was replaced by a new, more extravagant, 14-foot bronze and mirrored model. The birdcage, which became home to nine rare and tropical birds, featured prominently in an advertising campaign to make The Barclay “an island at the heart of the world’s most exciting island,” successfully marketed with the tagline, “Meet me at the Birdcage.”
Now more than ever, we're ready to make the island stay of your dreams come true so you can take full flight again. https://fal.cn/3aMKO

Ready to discover some local icons?
This week marks the 61st birthday of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, often referred to as just The Guggenheim. We adore this museum-image snapped by the late Bill Cunningham, who turned fashion photography into his own branch of cultural anthropology, on the streets of New York. It's an extra-special capture for The Barclay because Mr. Cunningham was not only a quiet star in his own right but frequently attended the hotel over the years including at our reopening in 2016.
Plan your visit and see art in person again with a growing list of re-openings at major New York City institutions. https://fal.cn/3b95x

We've always loved a chic arrival.
It's no secret that The Barclay is one of the most historic hotels in America. What's less known is the private Grand Central train platform that sits directly below our famed lobby. Early in Barclay history, carriage-owning patrons could take a special elevator or stairwell directly to their suites or the hotel lobby, a VIP indulgence a few hotels could match. While we may not be able to walk you down into our secret Grand Central space today, staycation visitors leaving via Metro-North can glimpse our little part of New York history by looking out to the right as the train leaves the station.
Let's help put you on track to making history. https://fal.cn/3b2TF

Wave Hill, the 28 acre public garden and cultural center in The Bronx may be less famous than it's sibling Central Park, but it's no less spectacular in autumn.

From the #BarclayArchives: An early view of the lobby, captured on this day in 1942.
Did you know that original Barclay architect Eliot Cross once hinted that the domed lobby ceiling was designed to reflect the hotel being positioned in the middle of the best of New York City both figuratively and literally? That is as true today as it ever was with family friendly and cultural finds moments from our door.

Did you know you'll find numerous chess boards around The Barclay? This one, situated inside The Harold S. Vanderbilt Penthouse, is a little ode to Alexander Alekhine, the World Chess Champion from 1927 to 1935 and again from 1937 until his death in 1946. His best move? Calling The Barclay his New York address. Time to make your move this spring: https://fal.cn/3ddb8

Caswell-Massey, originally founded as an apothecary in 1752, has come to be known as the original purveyor of the finest personal care products and accessories in the United States. In early February 1926, Caswell-Massey became The Barclay's first tenant, opening its flagship store in the hotel and remaining there for 84 years, until April 2010. Customers included many notable New Yorkers, as well as Broadway stars such as Alla Nazimova, and New York elite such as the Astors and Vanderbilts, George Gershwin, Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo to name but a few.
