A spiritual reflection.
Thank you for taking the time to read this article. My name is Trisia Baumgartner and I am the new Spiritual Counselor and Bereavement Coordinator with Interim Hospice of Oakland County. I would like to introduce both myself as my role with hospice.
I have my Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and my Master's degree in Theology and have been working in the field of spiritual well-being for over twenty years in one way or another. I have specialized in PTSD, depression, anxiety, and more specifically; loss. As a culmination of all of my years of work, I have chosen to bring all of my experience in ministry and psychology to help those in hospice. As a Spiritual Counselor, I am here to assist my patient and the and family with learning how to navigate difficult discussions, choices, and emotions during the course of an illness. This work is specifically targeted to the needs and desires of the patient and his/her family and often takes the form of home visits. These visits consist of confidential conversations with the patient and often times family conversations to address emotional and spiritual needs which may need to be addressed while on hospice. Many times I am asked to take the Lord's Supper to a patient and read Scripture which I am honored to have the ability to do.
Hospice is a scary word and an especially frightening concept but is often misunderstood. Hospice is a unique endeavor to assist a patient to live the rest of one's life with the greatest amount of support medically and emotionally. This care is not assistance in the endeavor to die; rather it is a loving endeavor in assisting a patient and famaily to live life to the fullest with the greatest amount of support at hand. It is a difficult decision to chose hospice for some , but in the few months that I have been honored to help our patients, I have seen that it is a selfless and loving choice to make.
If you are reading this, you are probably faced with a very difficult decision and desperately seeking answers and guidance. We may be strangers as you read this but if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and get to know me.
Sincerely,
Trisia Baumgartner, ThM, MA
