Meet Cheryl. She is one of our most dedicated home care workers. Cheryl has been with Interim HealthCare for 16 years. She chose this career because she was looking for something with a challenge, and because she truly loves to help people. This position also offers her the flexibility to be with her family and help care for her grandchildren.
We asked how she is dealing with the challenges of COVID-19 while working in home care. She responded that it has definitely been “different”. At first, it wasn’t easy getting used to wearing masks, but gloves and constant hand washing/sanitizing was always part of the job. She feels like everyone has adapted to the “new normal” and understands the importance of limiting exposure. She said she is very lucky that most of her clients have been staying in their homes and have minimal visitors, so exposure to the virus has been low.
Even with the daily struggles, Cheryl is always at work and would not change a thing. She looks forward to her visits with clients and being able to offer them the much needed socialization they need right now. She is happy to assist with keeping them safe and healthy in their homes.
Cheryl has met some wonderful people throughout her career. She says the one downfall to this job is that when the time comes, it is very hard to say goodbye. However, she gets through it all knowing she has made a difference in their lives and all the smiles of her clients she has met along the way. She feels blessed to have crossed paths with some amazing people.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated, and pretend the half-full mark on your gas gauge is “empty”; there is nothing worse than getting an empty tank in an unfamiliar neighborhood. (Hint: Keeping a flashlight and extra phone charger in the car can be a lifesaver.)

Your car, or a supply closet?
Stuff happens, so be prepared. Did your client’s dog just use your glove box as a chew toy? Were the wrong dressings picked up from the pharmacy? Did that thermometer just give a reading of 270 degrees? No matter the issue, your job is easier if you have the tools and equipment you need. You don’t have to turn your car into a supply closet… but having extras doesn’t hurt.

Just a little bit of preparation can really smooth out a crazy day.
