On November 21, 2020 at 6:38 PM, Crestwood officers responded to an auto accident in the south bound lanes in the 141st block of Cicero.
Two officers in fully marked police cars were on scene for the accident investigation and were blocking the curb lane of traffic with all of their emergency lights activated.
One of the assisting officers had returned to his patrol car to gather some additional paperwork and was leaning in the passenger side door. As he was gathering the paperwork, a vehicle described as a 2013 Dodge also traveling southbound on Cicero failed to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle and smashed into the rear of the squad car at a high rate of speed causing the officer to be struck by the squad car and thrown to the ground. The impact also caused the officer’s squad car to be pushed forward into the other squad car that was on scene.
The officer was treated and transported by the Crestwood Fire Department to Christ Hospital in serious condition and remains hospitalized at this time.
An accident report was completed by the Cook County Sheriff’s Police and is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.
The driver, Anthony Orsi, from Chicago was charged with the following;
Failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident
Failure to yield an emergency vehicle (Scott’s Law)
Driving while suspended under summary suspension for DUI.
The driver is scheduled to appear in bond court today at the Leighton Courthouse at 26th and California.
The Crestwood Police would like to remind the public of the requirements of the “Move Over” (Scott’s) Law, when approaching an emergency vehicle, or any vehicle with their hazard lights activated, drivers are required to slow down, and move over and change lanes if possible. In all cases drivers should proceed with due caution. The minimum fine for a violation is $250. A second or subsequent violation of this offense ranges from $750 to $10,000.
