January 13 is a great day to talk about the accordion! On January 13, 1854, piano maker Anthony Faas of Philadelphia filed the first patent for an improved accordion in the United States. He added keys "for the purpose of enabling the instrument to produce full and correct harmony in any key" and added a soundboard. (Patent: Construction of accordions: US 11062 A)

My wife recently hipped me to a groovy little phone-holding tripod thing that lets me shoot selfie videos easily. To test it out, here's a run-through of a favorite tune of mine that I first fumbled with on a gig several years ago, and as a latecomer to accordion I said to myself, "Self, if you can ever properly play that tune on accordion you're going to have to admit you're an accordion player." I've been treating it as sort of an étude in the recent couple of years as I've been more serious about learning to play this contraption.
I'm not all the way there yet -- in addition to the false start there are mistakes throughout. But this expresses some of the spirit of how I aim to play the tune, and I'll keep working on it.

I was playing Irish music this morning and after I played this, I went to turn the page to the next song - Old Molly jumped right in my face and said "I am a well known lady and you should make a video about me". LOL Since it was international woman's day earlier this month, I said OK. So I hope you enjoy this old sing along. It was fun to play. No exact date or composer, but there was a copy of Apollo's Medley, dating from around 1790, published in Doncaster. I make these videos to entertain my personal friends and to fill the large void in my life being alone during all this craziness. The saying goes - an apple a day, keeps the doctor away. My version is a video a day, keeps the loneliness away. I hope you enjoy my silly song.

Molly Malone or Cockles and Mussels. Always a great sing along. I was playing Irish music this morning and after I played this, I went to turn the page to the next song - Old Molly jumped right in my face and said "I am a well known lady and you should make a video about me". LOL Since it was international woman's day earlier this month, I said OK. So I hope you enjoy this old sing along. It was fun to play. No exact date or composer, but there was a copy of Apollo's Medley, dating from around 1790, published in Doncaster. I make these videos to entertain my personal friends and to fill the large void in my life being alone during all this craziness. The saying goes - an apple a day, keeps the doctor away. My version is a video a day, keeps the loneliness away. I hope you enjoy my silly song.
