One of the benefits of boiler heating systems is that they can be zoned to provide a more comfortable living space while saving energy. Zoning enables you to deliver heat only to those living spaces where you need it.
To test for leaks, fill the boiler with water and bring it to operating pressure; then close the valves to isolate it from the system proper. If the pressure drops, there is a leak and repair is needed. Start by checking the valves, as these are the most common escape points.
With boiler heating systems, the zoning option can be used with either baseboard or radiant applications. Here, separate heating loops of tubing are run throughout the home and connected to their own circulators or zone valves, which in turn are controlled by individual thermostats.
In accordance with standards established by the US Department of Energy, heat-generating boilers must meet a minimum annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating. These minimums range from 80% to 84% based on the type of fuel used.
Low-pressure steam boilers are specifically engineered for general heating applications. By definition, both the design and materials used in a low-pressure boiler are capable of withstanding pressures up to 15 psig (pounds per square inch gauge).
