Is it too late to plant? The answer is, no! 🍁 Fall in Utah is the perfect time to plant trees, shrubs, Perennials, and Pansies! Planting in the fall allows your plants to have winter and spring to work toward becoming established and they benefit from winter and spring moisture. As long as the ground isn’t frozen and you have a way to water it’s perfectly fine to plant right now.
Happy October 1st! What are you most looking forward to this month?
Asters are like a fall grande finale to a perennial garden! They’re also one of the last great feeding opportunities for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. If you’re not a fan of the typical fall chrysanthemum, Asters might be a worthy alternative!
The Swiss cheese plant, Monstera, comes in many different varieties like Monstera ‘deliciosa’ as seen here, gets its name from its large, heart-shaped leaves. As the plant ages, the leaves become covered with holes that resemble Swiss cheese. This is a tropical perennial plant from Central and South American that is normally grown as a houseplant. Swiss cheese plant is very easy to grow, and it loves to climb. If you give it a stake or trellis to grow upward, you'll enjoy larger leaves with those unique holes.

You have seen us talk about “Lori Mitchell figurines” in our posts, but what is a Lori Mitchell figurine? Only the most detailed, beautiful little whimsical characters that you have ever seen! Their designer, Lori, finds inspiration in old illustrations, children’s tales and anything whimsical. In 1998, she discovered folk art, and fell in love with the charm and nostalgia that this field embraces. Lori creates pieces that take people back to the magical years of childhood. In designing, Lori starts off with an idea, but as she sculpts, the characters begin to define their own personality. Lori is known for her exaggerated proportions and expressions…and every piece must have crazy socks! We are honored to be an authorized distributor of these amazing figurines. We especially love her holiday pieces; the Nativity and Nutcracker sets.

What makes a Poinsettia “bloom” right before Christmas? Considered a "short-day” plant, the reason you can buy them from J&J in bloom during the winter season is that our amazing greenhouse employees have manipulated their bud set. Flowering is dictated by a number of daylight hours available. If you wish to replicate this "forcing" next year to get your Poinsettia to bloom again, you will need about 10 weeks with 12 hours or less of sunlight per day." Sound like a lot of work? You bet it is, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!
