No institution better reflects the ideals and hopes of the founder, than does the J. N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home. It mirrors clearly the vision that filled the life of Joseph Nazaire Boufford. Born in the Province of Quebec in 1866, he later immigrated to Somersworth, New Hampshire with his wife Clara Talbot Boufford. In 1904 he carried his business aspirations to Manchester. Here he continued what was to be a life's study in the art of embalming and funeral direction. Following progressive associations with others he founded the establishment that today bears his name. Having laid down the policy formulated thru his years of professional service as a basis for future management, he relinquished control to his son Edmond J. Boufford. When J. N. Boufford opened the Boufford Funeral Home at 110 Bridge Street he changed the way people thought about funeral service. At the time, most funerals were conducted in private homes. He saw an opportunity to relieve grieving families of the details of preparing their homes for so many visitors. A funeral home would answer that need. To him dedication to public service was a sacred obligation. The present staff continues this tradition today. The chapels of the J. N. Boufford & Sons Funeral Home are spacious rooms that make one feel the dignity of their purpose.
