Irvine-based demolition and abatement company, Jackson Demo, reminds consumers that small space projects can sometimes be more complex than meets the eye. On a recent attic project in Irvine, crew members worked to remove insulation and ductwork in a confined space, requiring precision and technical skills to properly dispose of the asbestos-containing materials.
Crew members wearing hazmat suits crawled into narrow spaces to remove the fiberglass-like substance and properly bag duct work to make way for new insulation and a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. While some homeowners might be tempted to take on a job like this on their own, experts caution against it.
“If there’s one thing that I recommend, it is to hire a professional to take samples and test any material before going in and removing it yourself,” said Richy Jackson, senior project manager at Jackson Demo. “Asbestos is not visible to the human eye and it can cause a lot of harm if the fibers are released into the air. The only way to know if insulation contains asbestos is to have it tested.”
