About

Jeff Rippey has had a life long interest in Asian culture and has studied the martial arts as well as Asian philosophy for more than 30 years. These studies sparked an interest in Chinese medicine, and he spent 15 years studying both Chinese medicine and martial arts under Dr. Weaver in Kansas City.

Jeff has also studied Chinese medicine at WangJing teaching hospital in Beijing, China and completed a master's degree in acupuncture at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Denver, CO. He's an NCCAOM board certified acupuncturist and is licensed to practice in Colorado, Kansas and Missouri.

In addition to training in oriental medicine, Jeff spent 26 years working in the western medical system. He was a pharmacy technician for 10 years. Designed, tested and installed hospital software systems for Cerner Corp for 8 years, and spent 8 years working as a software architect for OptumInsight (a wholly owned subsidiary of United Health Group).

Jeff's practice philosophy is driven largely by channel theory. He uses a mostly distal approach which means needles are applied mainly on the arms and legs regardless of where the patient's issue or pain might actually be on the body. He follows a "less is more" mantra: 10 needles is a lot, most treatments are 4-7.

Small study investigating the use of acupuncture in frozen shoulder. Patients received either 10 sessions of acupuncture plus 10 sessions of PT, or only 10 sessions of PT. At 3 months the acupuncture + PT group reported less pain and greater shoulder mobility than the PT only group. I know that finances are often a concern, but there's a growing body of evidence that shows acupuncture + some other treatment often yields superior results relative to either acupuncture alone or some other treatment modality alone. Looks like today is a day for studies. This one is from the American Society of Anesthesiologists and showed that acupuncture prior to surgery resulted in less pain and less opioid use in a veteran population. https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-10/asoa-abs092720.php?fbclid=IwAR24Az1l6lIIZen_v-12PuZrZMWmdkwY443LnPnRgSQSuwHx8qA66mMC6C8 EUREKALERT.ORG Acupuncture before surgery means less pain, significantly fewer opioids for Veterans

Here's a link to one of my go-to sites for acupuncture evidence. Here's a nice quote from the piece I'm linking: "It is no longer possible to say that the effectiveness of acupuncture can be attributed to the placebo effect or that it is useful only for musculoskeletal pain." - Stephen Janz (2017) This is followed by a list of conditions where we have good to moderate evidence of acupuncture's effectiveness. With the exception of a few of these conditions - I've worked with just about everything on this list...plus a few... https://www.evidencebasedacupuncture.org/acupuncture-scientific-evidence/?fbclid=IwAR0Esv3k-eHXlW2663Lx_ospyg7Bkck0BJ5R-sDJRBRhQQfMz7wLtsen9Bo EVIDENCEBASEDACUPUNCTURE.ORG Acupuncture: An Overview of Scientific Evidence

Continuing the osteocalcin discussion - some of you are probably wondering what that post has to do with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Here's the scoop: https://www.healthcmi.com/Acupuncture-Continuing-Education-News/1875-acupuncture-improves-bone-density-for-osteoporosis-patients This is a study looking at acupuncture in the treatment of osteoporosis. There are a couple of things to note specific to osteocalcin: 1. Osteocalcin is cleared by the kidney and therefore may be elevated in those with kidney disease/disfunction. 2. Acupuncture was shown to increase serum osteocalcin levels in those with osteoprosis. Even though this study is looking at acupuncture in osteoporosis (for which it's effective, by the way), the fact that acupuncture can affect osteocalcin levels combined with new research showing osteocalcin is utilized by other tissues in the body for other reasons than bone formation, gives us yet another biochemical explanatory mechanism for some of acupuncture's effects. Update on the electricity situation - Evergy restored power to the other half of my clinic yesterday (12/31). I'm back to having internet, heat, and all my treatment rooms. There was some kind of issue with the meter on the building. No one knew my space had 2 meters attached to it. For some reason, one of the meters was set up residential and was billing to an address other than 3929 Oakland. When I set up service, that meter didn't get switched over which resulted in the problem. I appreciate everyone's patience and I apologize to the folks who canceled or rescheduled due to space and heat constraints. I'm open on Saturday (1/2) from 9AM to 6PM. Right now the morning looks pretty full, but there are plenty of open spots in the afternoon for folks to get in if they want or need to. Happy New Year to everyone and I'm looking forward to working with you in 2021!
Evergy saw fit to turn off power to half my office. Right now I have no internet, no heat, and only two treatment rooms with power. They're telling me the soonest they can get power turned back on is tomorrow (12/31) some time. I'm pursuing some other remedies, but if anyone wants to reschedule their appointment today or if you have an early morning appointment tomorrow and you'd like to move it later, I totally understand. You can DM me here on FaceBook, call/text to 913-204-1228 or shoot me an email at jeff.rippey@gmail.com to schedule/reschedule. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Holiday hours for New Year's: Open Wednesday 12/30 from 9-6 Open Thursday 12/31 from 9-6 Closed Friday 1/1 Open Saturday 1/2 from 9-6 Hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year! Don't forget, patients can walk in on any day the office is open. Still $20/15 minute walk-in treatment.
Since we're closing in on Christmas, I thought I'd post my hours for that week. I'll be in the office on Wednesday 12/23 and Thursday 12/24. The office will be closed Friday 12/25. I'll be in the office Saturday 12/26. Also, quick reminder for everyone: I'm taking walk-in patients any day that I'm open (Wed-Sat). Still $20 for 15 minutes. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!
I was just closing out some stuff from last week, the first week in my new office, and it turns out I treated 51 people! Thank you all very much for coming by. Everyone was very positive about the new space, and I really appreciate it. Parking was a recurring comment - there are 2 spaces in front of my office, 2 spaces across the lot in front of the Edward Jones financial office (they don't have much traffic during the week and aren't there at all on Saturday which opens up another 2 spaces for a total of 6), and a larger parking lot off Oakridge (in front of Advantage Title). If you use the larger lot, you will enter the door that has 1801 over the top and you'll need to come down 2 flights of stairs to my office. I have a video posted to this page showing how to get in from the upstairs lot. Signage is coming, the company making and installing my signs got hit by COVID and they're a little behind.
So far I've got a pretty good track record restoring smell/taste post COVID. I'm only using a few of these points and, for most patients, it's taking 3-4 treatments. One of the interesting things about this paper is that acupuncture worked where prescription meds did not. HEALTHCMI.COM Acupuncture For COVID-19 Loss Of Smell And Taste
