Stay toasty this season with these space heater safety tips from Travelers.
It is no secret that these extreme temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst causing water damage to our homes and businesses. Below are some tips on how to prevent frozen pipes
and how to carefully thaw frozen pipes:
Prevention:
• Keep garage doors closed if supply lines are present in garage.
• Let the cold water drip from faucets. Doing this even at a trickle can prevent freezing.
• Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night.
• Open cabinet doors where supply lines are present allowing warmer air to enter. (bathroom sink, kitchen sink, etc.)
Thawing (Carefully):
• Locate where the main water shut off valve so you can shut water off immediately limiting further damage.
• Never use open flames or torches for thawing frozen pipes!
• Set a space heater near the area, away from flammable materials.
• Use a hair dryer on the pipe.
• Turn on the faucet to allow water to run through pipe. This should help melt the ice.
• Keep heat applied until full water pressure is restored.
