The importance of mammograms cannot be overstated. Ladies should have a baseline screening mammogram done between thirty-five and forty years of age, and annually after age forty.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of death in women in the United States. Among those women with breast cancer detected on mammogram versus other means of diagnosis, there is a 23% increase in disease-free five-year survival and a 20% improvement in overall five-year survival.

Today marks the 199th birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to obtain a medical degree in the United States in 1849. She championed the participation of women in the medical profession and ultimately opened her own medical college for women.
