Have trouble sleeping? Try some (or all) of these strategies to make sure you’re getting enough Zs! #1 Consistency is key! Go to bed and wake up at as close to the same time every day as you can, even on the weekends. Maintaining a steady routine helps regulate your circadian rhythm. #2 Eat a protein rich snack, like a small handful of almonds, before bed to help balance blood sugars throughout the night. If blood sugar drops in the night, cortisol will rise. Cortisol is the stress hormone that makes you feel alert and awake. #3 Exercise! Aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise daily. Brisk walking counts! #4 “Brighter days and darker nights.” Get outside early in the morning or at the brightest time of the day or use a “happy light” during the darker months. Keep your bedroom as dark and cool as possible with light blocking curtains. #5 Slow, nasal breathing at 6 breaths per minute can calm the nervous system and the mind. There are many breath pacer apps, or you can count 5 in, 5 out.
