Yesterday was all about big statues. We saw the Jolly Green Giant, Culvert Man and Gertrude the Cow. We drove from Minnesota, through Wisconsin and down to Illinois. Along the way, we crossed the Mississippi River and saw some beautiful fall colors driving through Wisconsin. Oh yeah, we also listened to the entire soundtrack for Hamilton. Good day!!
Yesterday we drove through South Dakota. First stop was Wall Drug Store. It was much bigger than expected and pretty cool. They were the first to serve free ice water back in the 30s, which is how they enticed travelers off the highway. Then we went to the Corn Palace. So much more interesting than expected! Who knew corn palaces were a thing. Still having fun, lots of laughs with my mom. We have the same sense of humor and appreciation for the absurd.

Day 6 of our trip was more like a series of random stops. First was a drive by the home of a local artist who turns junk into sculptures in his yard. Then we headed to Little Bighorn, our planned stop for the day. The visitor’s center was closed and the ranger had stepped away from the gate so we did the tour without any kind of map. Fortunately, there was a cell phone audio tour along the route. It was very interesting and did a good job of providing a balance between the two sides of the battle. On our way out, the ranger gave us the map (so helpful🙄). As we headed to the hotel, we passed a visitor center and decided to stop. Turns out it was the geo center of the U.S. They had a great little museum! This morning we head into the Black Hills area.
