~Oral Health Affects the Whole Body~ Osteoporosis Scientists are investigating whether treating or preventing periodontal disease may promote bone density, and therefore may help inhibit osteoporosis. Research so far shows a link in the opposite direction, meaning that osteoporosis is a risk factor for periodontal disease. This suggests that strategies for reducing osteoporosis risk, such as optimizing calcium, vitamin K & vitamin D intake, may also delay alveolar bone loss, around the jawbone sockets that hold teeth roots. - Oral Health Prevents Systemic Disease - Jerry L. Sugary drinks, like soda and juice, can increase your risk of developing cavities.
Luckily in the 21st century, we have ready-made toothpaste and floss that tastes better, and is a better incentive to brush and floss!
~Oral Health Affects the Whole Body~ Respiratory Infections A common sequence of poor oral health in older adults is an elevated risk of a particular type of pneumonia. One study that followed the rate of respiratory illness among a group of older adults in Japan demonstrated the importance of thorough oral hygiene as the best prevention strategy. During 6 months, only 1 in 98 aging adults who had their oral health cared for by dental hygienists came down with a respiratory infection, compared to 9 out of 92 people who did not get the same dental care.
~Stay Active to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer Death~ Following a sedentary lifestyle may increase your risk of death from cancer, while engaging in physical activity may lower your risk, a recent study suggests. Researchers analyzed data on 8,002 cancer free people (mean age, about 70) who wore devices to track their physical activity and were followed an average of more than 5 years. During that period, 268 of the participants died of cancer. Those who spent the most time each day being sedentary were 52% more likely to die from cancer, compared with those who were the least inactive. The take home message: Cutting sedentary time and engaging in physical activity of any intensity may help to reduce your risk of dying from cancer.

Happy Global Handwashing Day!
~Oral Health Prevents Systemic Disease~ Low Birth-Weight Delivery Observational studies provide compelling evidence that periodontal infections increase the risk for preterm delivery of low birth-weight babies. This link might result from cascading effects of inflammation in the mouth compromising the womb environment. Whatever the connection, controlling periodontal disease has become a potential strategy for reducing preterm labor. -Jerry L. Butler, D.D.S, M.A.G.D

Quit Smoking Action Plan from the Mayo Clinic Nicotine is highly addictive, and to quit smoking β€” especially without help β€” can be difficult. Take that first step: Decide to stop smoking. Set a quit date. And then take advantage of the multitude of resources available to help you successfully quit smoking. One of the first steps of your plan should be "Get support." Support can come from family, friends, your doctor, a counselor, a support group or a telephone quit line. Support can also come from use of one or more of the medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration for smoking cessation. Another key step in your quit-smoking action plan? Planning for challenges. For example, make a list of high-risk places you'll want to avoid when you start your quit-smoking plan. Think of other places to go where smoking isn't allowed, such as a shopping mall, a museum or movie theater. Instead of using nicotine to help cope with stress, you'll need to learn new ways to cope. Many people manage stress through hobbies, meditation, exercise, comedy, or being in nature. Living smoke-free is your opportunity to live a healthier and probably longer life. Living smoke-free can also mean a better quality of life β€” with more stamina and a better ability to appreciate tastes and smells.

Stress Management from the Mayo Clinic Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the demands of life. A small amount of stress can be good, motivating you to perform well. But multiple challenges daily, such as sitting in traffic, meeting deadlines and paying bills, can push you beyond your ability to cope. The pace and challenges of modern life make stress management necessary for everyone. To monitor your stress, first identify your triggers. What makes you feel angry, tense, worried or irritable? Do you often get headaches or an upset stomach with no medical cause? Once you've identified your stress triggers, think about strategies for dealing with them. Identifying what you can control is a good starting point. For example, if stress keeps you up at night, the solution may be as easy as removing the TV and computer from your bedroom and letting your mind wind down before bed. Other times, such as when stress is based on high demands at work or a loved one's illness, you might be able to change only your reaction. Don't feel like you have to figure it out on your own. Seek help and support from family and friends, whether you need someone to listen to you, help with child care or a ride to work when your car's in the shop. Many people benefit from practices such as deep breathing, tai chi, yoga, meditation or being in nature. Set aside time for yourself. Get a massage, soak in a bubble bath, dance, listen to music, watch a comedy β€” whatever helps you relax. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help you manage stress. Eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Make a conscious effort to spend less time in front of a screen β€” television, tablet, computer and phone β€” and more time relaxing. It doesn't matter which relaxation technique you choose. Select a technique that works for you and practice it regularly.

5 Ways To Sleep More Soundly from the Mayo Clinic If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, you're not alone. Sleep plays a crucial role in your health, energy levels and everyday functioning. Observe your sleep patterns for a few weeks. Then try these five strategies for better sleep. 1. Minimize light and sound. Darkness causes your brain to release melatonin for a calming, sleepy effect. As a result, it's important to minimize your exposure to light before bedtime. Even the light from your computer, television or other devices might make it more difficult for you to fall asleep. Noise can also interfere with your ability to sleep. Try using a fan or a noise machine to block out unwanted noises. 2. Get comfortable. Adults spend about a third of their lives asleep, so it's worthwhile to invest in bedding that comforts and relaxes you. Before climbing into bed, try lowering your thermostat a few degrees. 3. Keep a routine. Just like kids, adults sleep better when they have a bedtime routine. Doing the same thing before bed each night can help prepare your body for rest and condition your brain for sleep. Stick to activities that promote relaxation such as gentle stretching, journaling, reading or meditation. 4. Manage stress. How you handle stress can play a significant role in your ability to fall and stay asleep. If your busy mind is keeping you up at night, try practicing stress management techniques before you go to bed. Experiment with aromatherapy, deep breathing, keeping a gratitude journal or meditation. 5. Get out of bed. If you find yourself lying in bed stressing about your inability to sleep, get out of bed and do something that will promote relaxation. This might be reading an uninteresting book, practicing a relaxation technique or focusing on your breath. When you begin to feel drowsy, head back to bed.
