"My journey was one of the hardest. I was on the way home from school on the second day of my 4th semester finals when I got the devastating call that my mom died. I made a U-turn and went back to the campus cause I couldn’t go home to an empty house. I had exceptional support from everyone. Many people thought I would quit or redo the semester but with the kind of support I had, I had to push. All the instructors were excellent! I can honestly say that without the support I had from the staff and students at Jersey College I would not have made it this far. Today we honor Bessie Blount Griffin who was one of the earliest nurse inventors. She invented a feeding tube during World War II to help feed paralyzed veterans.

Today we honor Lawrence C. Washington who was the first male Army Nurse Corps officer to be promoted to the rank of colonel and the first black male nurse to be selected, attend and receive certification for residency education at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. After leaving military service, Washington continued his commitment to the nursing field through teaching at several universities.

Today we honor Sojourner Truth who strove to improve the cleanliness and quality of care and urged Congress to finance training programs for nurses. In an age before any formal nurse training existed, Truth’s perception and advocacy of the need for such education remain truly legendary.

Today we honor Hazel W. Johnson-Brown who achieved a nursing bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and an educational administration PhD. She was the first black woman to be promoted to brigadier general and the first to head the 7,000-strong US Army Nurse Corps and was awarded a number of distinguished military decorations in addition to being named Army Nurse of the Year twice.
