The exterior massing is a collision of two opposing shed structures that form an X. The West elevation is a continuation of the corrugated rusty metal roof - which protects the structure from the prevailing west wind -similar to how a oyster might orient it's shell against the current. The remaining elevations are clad with an untreated horizontal cedar rain screen. All the exterior materials were allowed to patina thus making them maintenance free. Inside The 1000 sq ft 2 bedroom residence - spaciousness is achieved through its simplicity . The double height living/ kitchen is open to an upstairs master loft / bedroom, and the space is appointed with everything one might need yet there is no excess. Windows are strategically placed to capture views and maintain privacy.

Traditional architecture was generated in response to climatic and cultural influences of the region. It is felt that it is the architect’s role to acknowledge the characteristics of the site and region with the building design. It is my duty to challenge, as well as, accept the preconceived definition of mountain architecture. New technologies and lifestyles merge with rural myth and tradition to bring a “timeless architecture”, a hybrid of indigenous and contemporary elements to meet the client’s needs.

Field Trip: Recently I was asked what is the hardest part of your profession(architecture)? I was at a loss for a response. After some soul searching, I came up with the following: The time between that moment of a sketch inspiration to the actual built creation takes so long- often one to two years. The multitude of layers that in the end become the vehicle or stage in which life unfolds: a home.
