The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) course developed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) is designed to promote responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. Dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate or title from the American Kennel Club. During Canine Good Citizen class at JM, we build on foundation behaviors and learn to work on distraction, distance, and duration. The test is administered on the last day of class. 🎓

Meet our September Pet of the Month, Fenway! 🎉

One of the happiest black labs around Fenway was evaluated at the resort in January and immediately fit into our PLAYtrain I group. He loves all of our staff members and enjoys romping around with his friends. Fenway has some great basic obedience skills, but he is still working on not getting overly excited upon entering his playgroup before he transitions into our PLAYtrain II group. 🐾

Fenway does have one arch-nemesis, stairs. Fenway's owners have reached out to our Senior Obedience Trainer, Donna, to help conquer this fear. While Fenway is here for his regular day of daycare, Donna gives him individualized training during his day school add on. Donna focuses on motivational training techniques to build his confidence around the new stairs we have at the resort. 👏

Leaf piles sure can be a lot of fun for dogs, but there are some hidden dangers to letting your four-legged family member dive into them. 🍂

🍄Toxic Vegetation. Some wild mushrooms, chestnuts, and red maple leaves can be toxic if your dog ingests them in large quantities. If you believe your dog HAS ingested any of these, and is vomiting, lethargic, or has excessive drooling, you will want to call your vet as soon as possible!

🐍Snakes. Snakes love to hang out in dark, damp piles of leaves. If your dog disturbs a pile of leaves they are in, they may become aggressive.

🚫Ticks. Piles of dead leaves are the perfect place for ticks to hang out. As the weather cools off, these pesky bugs are looking for a warm coat to hang out in for the winter. Your dog presents the perfect host for this. Always check for ticks after your dog has been in, or near, a pile of dead leaves.

A cat purring doesn’t always mean they’re happy. Like all other vocalizations, it’s a form of communication and could mean several things. 👇

😸 They’re happy. If your cat has found a cozy place to nap, a particularly good spot to sunbathe in, or are in the middle of a full-body massage, it’s safe to assume they’re happy and content.
😼 They’re ready to be fed. If it’s getting close to mealtime, and your cat is following you around and letting out a half-purr-half-whine, they’re probably anxiously awaiting breakfast or dinner.
😿 They’re experiencing some form of pain. Your cat’s purring could potentially be a form of coping. They could be suffering from a broken bone, swollen muscle, or generalized pain.

If your cat is purring excessively and they don’t seem particularly happy, be sure to keep a close eye on your feline family member. 💛
Do dogs like being hugged? 🐶

The short answer is no. While some dogs will allow hugs from their humans, it’s not something that they generally enjoy. When dogs communicate with other dogs, placing a leg over another dog’s body is seen as an assertion of dominance. Consequently, when dogs receive hugs from their humans, they may consider it a form of intimidation, potentially reacting in a hostile manner.🤔

Some dogs, like Chewie here, are BIG fans of cuddles! However, most of the time they’ll prefer a scratch on their ears or chest, a full-body massage, or a good, old-fashioned belly rub. 💛

If your pup hasn’t had much experience with dog toothbrushes, put some pet-safe toothpaste onto one of their rope toys and let them chew on it. This will do some general cleaning of their teeth and will begin to desensitize them to teeth brushing and the taste of their toothpaste! 👍

At JM Pet Resort, we ONLY use positive reinforcement, motivational training methods. We believe in forming a relationship with a dog by associating training with something positive, often food. Motivational training is about:
🐾 Using correct language and proper body language
👍 Allowing your dog to enjoy training
🐾 Connecting positive choices to positive results
👍 Providing plenty of treats, praise, and pets
🐾 Building a relationship with the dog

Of course, there are always behaviors that need to be corrected. As humans, we tend to focus on the negatives. NO! UH-UH! STOP IT! These should be short and sweet. Positives should be a big deal and should be rewarded with plenty of treats, praise, and petting. This training philosophy will eventually result in your dog wanting to be in your bubble; they learn how they get the good stuff!
