A recent scam has been brought to our attention and we want to make you aware. SECU Members are being contacted—from a phone number that may appear to be ours—and told that there’s something wrong with their account. The schemer will ask for personal identifiable information, such as your PIN or online banking log-in information.
Please note, these calls are not from a SECU team member and we will *never* ask you for personal information, such as this, over the phone. If you receive a call like this, please hang up immediately and call us at 410-487-7328 to report the call. Late Tuesday, December 29th, the IRS announced they are starting to issue the 2nd round of Economic Impact Payments aka stimulus payments to some taxpayers. We know there are lots of questions surrounding these payments, so here are some FAQs:
1. How much is the 2nd stimulus payment?
Authorized by the newly enacted COVID-relief legislation, the second round of payments, or “EIP 2,” is generally $600 for singles and $1,200 for married couples filing a joint return. In addition, those with qualifying children will also receive $600 for each qualifying child. Dependents who are 17 and older are not eligible for the child payment.
2. Will SECU be able to tell members when to expect their payments if receiving one?
As of 12/30, the IRS is reporting that the link used during the last round of payments, “Get My Payment”, is being updated with new information and the IRS anticipates the tool will be available in a few days. Once updated, the link allows for the entry of personal information and then shows individual Economic Impact Payment status. Due to the high volume of inquiries, there may be delays accessing the link. The IRS is the only source for information on future payment dates.
https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center#paymentnot
3. How are the credits being issued to members?
The IRS has reported they will issue ACH credits to the same account used on the 2019 tax filing or issue a check. The IRS has stated that ACH credits will be issued first, followed by checks being mailed. The IRS will be issuing credits on a rolling schedule and has stated that it could be several months before all payments are distributed. The Department of the Treasury is currently stating that they hope to have a “large majority of payments issued within the next two weeks”.
4. When will I receive my stimulus payment?
113 million payments released 12/29.
Expected to be completed by week of 1/24.
147 million payments in 28 days from signing of legislation.
5. When will paper checks start to be issued?
Checks will be mailed daily and the volume expected is 5 to 7 million checks per week. The first batch went out on 12/30/20. Another 7 million checks are expected to be mailed out in the next 3-4 weeks.
6. Is the IRS contacting people by phone to get their bank information?
Definitely not. There are a number of scams targeting consumers. The IRS says to be on the lookout and avoid anyone who:
• Asks you to sign over your economic impact payment check to them.
• Asks by phone, email, text, or social media for verification of personal and/or banking information saying that the information is needed to receive or speed up your economic impact payment.
• Suggests you can get a tax refund or economic impact payment faster by working on your behalf. This scam could be conducted by social media or even in person.

Today, we're featuring DR. LILLIE MAY CARROLL JACKSON.
Lillie May Carroll Jackson was born in Baltimore in 1889, just twenty-four years after slavery was abolished. She attended Baltimore’s Colored High and Training School (now Coppin State University). After graduating in 1908, she began teaching second grade at the Biddle Street School.
Lillie had a commitment to fighting segregation. Known to Baltimoreans as the “Mother of Freedom,” she skillfully used picketing and protests as part of a non-violent resistance strategy to eliminate Jim Crow segregation and discrimination laws locally and nationally.
Under her leadership, the Baltimore branch of the NAACP became one of the country's largest branches and won many important legal victories for civil rights.
Inducted into the Maryland Hall of Fame in 1986, Lillie Carroll Jackson was named, “Marylander of the Century” by the Baltimore Sun in 1999.

Today, we're featuring JAMES E. LEWIS.
James was born in 1923 and grew up in East Baltimore. In 5th grade, he received specialized arts education and was noted as a standout pupil both for art and singing. While still in high school, Lewis had been awarded a Carnegie Institute grant to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art, but the school was highly segregated at the time and thus he was prohibited from attending. Luckily, a compromise was made with the school to allow an advanced student, American artist Charles Cross, to tutor him in private sessions. He graduated from Dunbar High with the highest average in the arts.
He later received both a Bachelor and Masters in Fine Arts. In 1950, he received an offer to teach at Morgan State University. Lewis was also a personal collector of art. He was known to have collected the works of his students, buying them to inspire them to keep producing art.

Today is NATIONAL HUG A G.I. DAY!
March 4 is the only day on the calendar that’s also a military command - march forth! - so it’s only appropriate that this be the day that we celebrate the servicemen and servicewomen in our lives with National G.I. Day. Soldiers in the U.S. military — including members of the Army, Air Forces, and Marines — have been referred to as G.I.s since 1940, and today is the day that we celebrate everything they do for us with a big hug, either literal or metaphorical.

💚 STIMULUS PAYMENT UPDATE💚
The IRS has now updated their site to say “Some Americans may see the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date of March 17.” This means that March 17 is the first official date that some people will start to see cleared payments in their accounts.
However, please keep in mind that payments are being sent out on a rolling schedule, so not all payments will be available on that date.
