The weather forecast is calling for significantly warmer temperatures and heavy rainfall with the potential for flooding on Thursday and Friday. From our experience, heavy rainfall on top of a significant amount of snow often leads to water backing up into basements and roof leaks caused by ice dams. Here are a few tips to prepare:
• Check to make sure your Sump Pump is working well (if you have one).
• Make sure your gutter downspouts are clear for water to flow as the snow and ice on your roof rapidly melts.
• Raise personal property off the basement floor in case water gets in.
• If water pools near your home, shovel a trench in the snow to allow pooling water to flow away from your home.
• If safe to do so, remove as much snow as possible off your roof before the storm. Waterlogged snow is much heavier and can lead to ice dams or collapses.
Also, there is an optional coverage that can be added to Homeowners insurance policies to provide coverage for water backing up into your basement through sewers and/or drains. Please contact our office before the storm if you're unsure if you currently have this coverage or would like to add it.
