A freshly cut cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto) oozing freely. Cutting the head from a single-stemmed palm will kill it because its only growth point is at the top--the apical meristem. The other thing to notice here is the lack of annual rings and that's because palms are not true trees and do not produce real wood.
