Dr. Joseph Jenrette has been involved in cancer care at MUSC for over 30 years. His primary interests in cancer have been cancers of women -- including breast and gynecological cancers of children -- as well as all types of solid cancers and brain tumors. Most of his efforts at this time, however, concern treating patients with a machine called a Gamma Knife, which is a very specialized piece of medical equipment that treats with radiation. It is totally non-invasive so that there are no actual knives but rather everything is done with highly focused radiation. The goal of his treatments is to pinpoint the radiation just to the tumor and avoid spillover as much as possible all of the normal brain tissues. The Gamma Knife is accurate to within less than a millimeter. The treatments are given typically as an outpatient in the course of only one day of treatment. The MUSC Gamma Knife team consists of a neurosurgeon, a radiation physicist and Dr. Jenrette -- a radiation oncologist. The team treats a large variety of diseases including malignant brain tumors as well as non-malignant brain tumors. Additionally, we treat a number of vascular tumors in the brain., MUSC was one of the first centers in the country in which these highly focused treatments were given and has one of the busiest Gamma Knife treatment programs in the country. Besides treating patients on this specialized piece of medical equipment, we also have a comprehensive clinic for patients undergoing treatments on the Gamma Knife. We coordinate with our specialized colleagues in other clinics to streamline care in order to make management of brain tumors as efficient and effective as possible., Dr. Jenrette is proud of the cancer care at MUSC where he works together with teams in order to provide cutting edge care to the citizens of South Carolina and beyond.
