Having worked at Mount Sinai for over 33 years, she calls it her “professional home” and has developed relationships with her patients and their families. With recent technological advances and the use of people-first language in addressing people with disabilities, she is hopeful that the Center will continue to make a change in the everyday lives of its patients.

A new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes #COVID19, appeared in Great Britain in greater frequency in December and has been reported in New York State. The new variant appears to spread more rapidly than older ones and has a distinct set of genetic changes, or mutations.
"Hope is on the horizon. We have highly protective vaccines, which will be delivered to as many people as possible in the coming weeks and months. Since the case numbers in our area remain worrisome, we really need to be careful and follow the guidelines that work for all SARS-CoV-2 variants," says Dr. Viviana Simon: https://mshs.co/ga #MountSinaiToday #COVID19Vaccine

Two years ago, doctors at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital performed a ‘medical miracle’ on Lexi. Born without a bladder and with both kidneys blocked, she first underwent surgery at age six so doctors could create an artificial bladder. In January 2019, she received a kidney transplant, with her father as the donor.
Today, Lexi is doing great! Luther, Lexi’s father and kidney donor, said, “Donating my kidney was the greatest thing I've done because nothing has given me more joy than watching Lexi grow and laugh and develop as a healthy, happy, and strong young lady with a long life ahead of her with the support of her mother, sister, and medical team.“
Mount Sinai's Dr. Hilary Hotchkiss said, “Lexi has come a long way, and at each step, she has been incredibly brave. With help from her parents, Lexi makes sure she takes her medicine every day to keep her transplant kidney healthy.”

I have senior parents and a son in public school and when the pandemic first hit I took every possible precaution I could to protect them; from keeping them home, to changing my clothes outside our house and disinfecting everything that crossed our threshold. In 2018, when Alan Feigenberg turned 74, he started to experience some unusual symptoms. He had minor memory lapses and mental challenges and was uncharacteristically short tempered.
He was diagnosed with a very large cavernous malformation on his brain. Mount Sinai's Neurosurgeon Dr. Saadi Ghatan, successfully removed the cavernous malformation in February 2019. After the procedure, Mr. Feigenberg felt better physically and says his personality also significantly improved. His wife agreed, and told Dr. Ghatan, “Thank you for giving his life back.”
Since the successful procedure, Mr. Feigenberg has been taking a low dose of anti-seizure medication. He has had several follow-up EEGs, which show he’s had no more seizures. He also hasn’t experienced any symptoms. Mr. Feigenberg is glad he had the surgery, despite his initial reservations. “Fundamentally,” he says, “it can really change your life for the better.” Read Alan's full #PatientStory: https://mshs.co/kr

As a hospitalist at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, I was always impressed by the professional demeanor and agility of Gayrleen Friedman. A unit secretary, she supported COVID-19 units, and she did so admirably. Her nurse manager, Leonie Taylor, recently retired, but she told me she could not have survived the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic without Gayrleen’s assistance. “In times of extreme crisis,” she says, “Gayrleen provided stability and reassurance. And I recently found out that Gayrleen’s 23rd anniversary with MSBI was in December. We are lucky to have such a loyal team member.”

To mark the beginning of #WomensHistoryMonth on Monday, March 1, we would like to take this opportunity to honor Dr. Doris Wethers. In 1958, Dr. Wethers became the first Black attending physician at Mount Sinai Morningside, then St. Luke’s Hospital, where she specialized in pediatrics. Dr. Wethers became the Chief of Pediatrics at St. Luke’s in 1974. Throughout her career, Dr. Wethers and her sickle cell team studied and developed several protocols, and improved the detection, treatment, and life expectancy of sickle cell patients, and called greater attention to sickle cell anemia. Dr. Wethers passed away in 2019 at the age of 91, but we remember her for being a trailblazer in the medical field, and for her tireless efforts, as a true pioneer, to serve those living with sickle cell disease.

When Lodoe noticed her 14-month-old son, Jampel, started developing fever and night sweats, she gave him Tylenol because she believed he was just teething. However, the fever continued. The next morning, he was shivering. Suddenly, he had seizure. She dialed 911, and an ambulance took them to a hospital near her home. He was given Motrin and sent home, but his fever persisted.
The next day, she brought Jampel to the Pediatric Emergency Department at The Mount Sinai Hospital. The physicians conducted tests and also noted a new heart murmur, which Jampel had not had before. Lodoe didn’t believe it would be that serious. However, pediatric cardiologist Kenan Stern, MD, advised them to have Jampel admitted to Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital right away. Jampel’s heart murmur was caused by endocarditis of his mitral valve, an infection that was causing the heart valve to leak. He needed antibiotic treatment.
Jampel’s family stayed in the hospital for his treatment, and Lodoe was amazed at how caring and compassionate all the staff members were. Every morning, the nurses took Jampel for a ride in a bright red wagon to his echocardiogram tests, and he loved it so much. “I can’t say thank you enough to all the nurses who made Jampel feel so safe,” she says. “We feel blessed.”
According to Dr. Stern, Jampel’s valve leakage was severe enough that it was causing a strain on his heart and surgery was needed. The team performed a complex operation and were able to successfully repair Jampel’s mitral valve with minimal residual leak.
Jampel, who will soon be 3 years old, is doing very well, his mother says. He is smart and talkative, and has follow-up visits every six months with Dr. Stern, whom the family has found to be a kind, knowledgeable, compassionate, and loving doctor. Lodoe says, “Jampel is so grateful that God has given him so many wonderful pediatric doctors, surgeons, nurses, child life specialists, and social workers at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital.”
Today, we want to focus on one number: 9,805. That is the number of COVID-19 patients whom our Mount Sinai front line heroes have healed and sent home since the pandemic first reached our doors.
Through all the trial, tribulation, heartbreak, exhaustion, and fear, they fulfilled our mission to heal the sick and take care of our communities. Nearly 10,000 people were able to go home to their loved ones because of their efforts. We are grateful. Our city and our region are grateful. And most of all, those patients and their families are grateful.
Under normal circumstances, people with disabilities face discrimination, inaccessibility to services, and other challenges to independent living. She is hard-working, kind to all patients and staff, professional, and efficient. I appreciate that she takes her time with hard sticks, accepts challenges, and really does her best to locate the best vein and minimize the number of times a patient is stuck with a needle—decreasing their pain and risk of infection. The next pandemic is coming. Will we be prepared?
“As I look at these images, what I see is staff, nurses, techs, and doctors, providing care for very sick and fragile patients,” says Peter Shearer, MD, FACEP, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President, Medical Staff, at Mount Sinai Brooklyn.
He adds, “One year into this pandemic we only have a few, modestly effective new medications for COVID-19. What keeps these patients from dying is the endless care that staff provides: care is encouraging confused patients to keep their uncomfortable oxygen masks on; care is helping a patient spend time lying on their belly; care is ambulating patients so they don’t weaken during their stay. Providing this care is hard work, and these people have been doing it day and night for over a year. The staff also provides care to co-workers, and that sense of community keeps us going.”
