ROOFING BUYERS BEWARE: FACTORY REJECTS IN SHINGLES
ROOFING BIDS, ESTIMATES, AND PRICING
We wanted to take a moment to again point out how careful consumers have to be when hiring roofing contractors. It is important that you be aware that should you install a new roof and later have a warranty claim, the manufacturer will ask your roofing contractor to provide them with a copy of the invoice to prove that the materials on your roof were legally purchased from the manufacturer’s authorized distributor. That invoice is proof to the manufacturer that the materials were properly purchased and were not factory rejects sold “As IS”, or worse . . . stolen. Most importantly. That invoice is the foundation for your warranty.
ASPHALT SHINGLE FACTORY REJECTS
From time to time, EVERY manufacturer regardless of their industry will end up producing a run of materials that do not meet their specifications. In the case of shingles, rejected products get pulled and tagged as shown in the photo. (Sometimes they are unwrapped or re-wrapped in a plain, non-branded wrapper.) The manufacturer them sells the product at a discount “As Is, No Warranty” to offset their production losses.
Unfortunately, rejected shingles end up in “wholesale” or “discount” warehouses and in the hands of less than scrupulous roofing contractors with the end result of these rejects finding their way onto roofs in neighbourhoods like yours.
WHAT YOUR CONTRACTOR DOESN’T TELL YOU
The really bad news is that often homeowners aren’t even aware that they are getting factory rejects; sometimes the roofing contractor, the supposed “expert” the person whom the homeowner is trusting to properly advise and guide them, misinforms the homeowner that there is nothing wrong with the shingles and that they’re still good. This is absolutely far from the truth.
If there is “nothing wrong” with factory rejects or seconds, wouldn’t the manufacturer rather sell these products at the full wholesale price to the distributor instead of taking the loss?
Alternatively, the roofing contractor doesn’t tell the homeowner that he is installing factory rejects, and he lowers his price to win the bid, leaving the homeowners to believe that they’re getting a good deal.
Folks, these shingles are not a good deal. Factory seconds are tagged as such because they failed to meet the manufacturer’s standards. Factory seconds will not hold up and perform on your roof in the way that they are designed. This means you have a much higher potential of experiencing roofing problems and material failure after your roofing contractor gets paid and disappears down the road.
BUYING FACTORY SECONDS DOESN’T MAKE SENSE
If you jump on YouTube and search for “shingles, factory seconds” you will see a couple of videos of someone from a discount store touting that they have factory seconds available and there’s nothing wrong with them. If there is nothing wrong with these shingles, why are they tagged as seconds and “As Is” with no warranty? Wouldn’t the manufacturer rather sell them at the full wholesale price instead of taking a loss?
The price of a new roof is not just in the shingles. It’s the cost of all the other materials involved plus the labour. Should you purchase “seconds” and later have a problem, you will be stuck with the problem of trying to get the roofer that sold you those shingles to show up and make it good.
(Hint: don’t count on it.)
If the shingles fail, and you have to replace your roof again, the cost of replacing that roof will be solely at your expense. Insurance companies will pay for storm damage, but they do not pay for damages caused by poor workmanship. As if paying for an entire new roof out of your own pocket isn’t bad enough, consider the additional expense of having to replace sheet rock on walls and ceilings, plus texturing and painting costs.
Think it won’t happen to you? Neither did the other homeowners that end up calling reputable roofing companies (like ourselves) every day to come out and replace roofing that should have lasted the homeowners another fifteen or twenty years.
I have seen entire ceilings that have “caved” in due to leaks that went undetected for months and years. Over time, the drywall absorbed the rainwater until the drywall failed and collapsed onto the furnishings, electronics, and flooring below.
HOW DO YOU PROTECT YOURSELF? BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU ARE GETTING AND WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH
Make certain you’re not being sold false promises and rejects. Ask questions and be observant. Your roofing materials should be delivered to your home’s job site by a legitimate roofing supply company, not delivered in an unbranded truck or on the back of a pick up or trailer.
Resist the urge to buy roofing materials from online marketplaces and flea markets.
Think twice before hiring someone who knocks on your door after a storm, or worse, setting appointments with unsolicited roofing salespeople calling your home.
Shingles should be wrapped in the manufacturer’s original branded packaging, not loose or “unbundled”. Inspect the materials delivered to your job. Watch for the manufacturer’s attempt at branding these shingles as rejects or seconds with paint or tags on the wrappings of the bundles.
Replacing your roof is a major home improvement project; no one wants to pay twice. You know that old saying that if it sounds too good to be true . . . it probably is? The peace of mind of hiring a reputable contractor, buying first grade shingles, and getting a great install right from the start far outweighs the real cost of getting mixed up with con men and scammers posing as legitimate roofing contractors.
WARNING Dont let your home get Factory Second shingles‼️2 differnt new homes.If you see a house loaded with shingles and they don't have plastic wraps on them guess what. Those are recycled shingles. I see alot of new construction going on in Palm bay with manufacturers defective shingles. These manufacturers such as Owen's Corning sell these shingles to be recycled and a few supply companies sell them as good product when they have color defects and have 0-warranty. MAKE SURE THE SHINGLES YOU GET ARE WRAPPED IN THE MANUFACTURERS PLASTIC WITH ALL ITS PRODUCT INFO AND THE BATCH NUMBERS PRINTED!
Buyers beware. These shingles have 0 warranty and have manufacturers defects‼️
