Did you know that November is Senior Wellness Month? We all love our gray faced babies and want to keep them in our lives as long as possible. To help you achieve this, we are offering our Annual Wellness Packages at a promotion rate from now through November 30th! Our Annual Wellness Packages include a full physical exam by one of our doctors, recommended vaccines, CBC/Chemistry/Urinalysis to check organ function, heartworm test, and fecal analysis. These Wellness Packages not only provide an excellent baseline for the future and give you peace of mind but also allow us to detect disease processes before the pet becomes symptomatic. Spots are filling up fast for this promotion, so call or use your PetDesk app to set up an appointment!
We love them all!
We hear it all the time... "My pet looks perfectly healthy, we don't need to run bloodwork." What if I told you 1 in 7 "healthy" adult dogs and cats have abnormal findings on their bloodwork? Animals are notorious for hiding disease until it is severe but bloodwork allows us to take a peak inside the body and catch abnormalities early before the pet becomes sick. Modern medicine is pretty amazing! Oh, and did I mention that we are offering promotion pricing on our Annual Wellness Packages from now until Nov 30th?
Thank you Phillip with Idexx for the Olive Garden lunch and learn!! Get ready everybody, we got a big promotion heading your way soon that will benefit your dog, cat, and wallet 😄
Diet, exercise, and a yearly checkup are vital to maintaining not only your health but your pets, especially when 1 doggie year is equal to 7 human years! Lucky for you we are running a promotion on our Annual and Senior Wellness Packages from now until Nov 30th. Call to find out more and to schedule your pet's appointment. 254-666-3355

Happy Halloween everyone!! The staff had a blast dressing up this year and we even got a Dr. to join in on the fun 👻 Here is the costumes for this year... Tammie and Ashley are clowns, Allison is a cat and her pup Cassie is a witch, Kayla is an ostrich jockey, Liz and Paige are candy corn twins, Shalaine is a cowgirl, Victoria is Winifred from Hocus Pocus, Finn is a lion of course, and finally Dr. Sacra is a biker!

Offer hot water to your horse in this cold weather
West Texas Equine Clinic
October 27 at 3:09 PM ·
It's a little early in the year to be creating this post, but it's 2020. What did you expect...............................It is without question a pain in the butt however offering your horse one bucket of HOT water morning and night when the temps are this low, will greatly decrease the likelihood that your horse will colic from not drinking enough. Don’t believe me? When you go feed this morning, break the ice and take a swig of the unfrozen water. It’s so cold that it will burn your mouth. Unlike cattle, who have a much tougher mouth, horses have one very similar to ours. If you don’t enjoy drinking it, they won’t either. Do your poor overworked vet a favor and offer your horses hot water. I’ve been preaching this for a long time and I don’t remember the last time that I had to treat a horse for colic, who had been getting hot water, and had what I considered a dehydration related colic. The ones getting cold water/broken up ice? Oh, I’ve treated lots of those for colic.
Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to ALL the 2 and 4 legged veterans that have served to protect our country, our freedom, and our way of life.

Prayers needed for murphy
Today we rushed him to his vet and now rushing him to Central Texas Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital, PLLC
UPDATE
We had some hard decisions to make today. Murphy has some bleeding in his chest. we decided that murphy wasn’t ready to give up the fight yet. We opted for surgery. We are hoping that he can continue to be the fighter he has been and make it thru surgery. Murphy will have surgery tonight to remove his spleen. They will check some nodules on his liver. We need lots of prayers for his surgery and a miracle that the nodules on his liver are benign.
Murphy is out of surgery. Unfortunately his liver is covered in nodules. He will come home in a couple days on meds to hopefully prevent any bleed outs and we can enjoy what little time we have and make it the best time.
If anyone would like to send a toy to murphy for his bucket list. I’ve created an Amazon wish list for him. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/25YX4E9RQL0WQ?ref_=wl_share
All of these dogs look healthy, right? Research has shown that 1 in 5 "healthy" dogs actually has abnormal findings on their bloodwork. That statistic is proving itself at our clinic. Because of our November Wellness Package Promotion, we have diagnosed multiple "healthy" dogs and cats with underlying health conditions including platelet disorders, kidney disease, and liver disease 😳Our Wellness Package Promotion pricing ended 11/30 so make your appointment today!

This is why we recommend performing a urinalysis on patients that are urinating blood. If we see crystals on a urinalysis then a bladder stone is likely to be forming. Most bladder stones are not this extreme but any stone can cause bladder irritation and reduce the amount of space in the bladder to hold urine.

As we continue to monitor the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus infection (EHM) in Florida, let's take this opportunity to discuss once more the importance of biosecurity measures to stop disease spread. We recommend the following biosecurity precautions for horse owners, particularly if their horses have recently traveled to horse shows or were exposed to horses that have traveled:
1) Monitor horses for clinical signs (like fever, diarrhea, discharge from the nostrils, coughing, or an increased respiratory rate) and take the temperature twice daily (anything greater than 101.5 is considered a fever).
2) Immediately isolate any horse(s) showing clinical signs.
3) Implement movement restrictions until the situation is evaluated.
4) Contact your veterinarian to evaluate your horse and to propose a comprehensive biosecurity protocol.
5) Increase biosecurity measures that include extensive disinfection of surfaces and equipment that come in contact with affected horses: wash or sanitize your hands between interacting with horses; take time while filling water buckets and feed tubs, do not cross contaminate; minimize the use of shared equipment and tack.
6) Make sure your horse is up to date on vaccinations.
7) Establish communication with all parties involved (owners, boarders, trainers, etc.).
More resources and information about biosecurity are available on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at https://equinediseasecc.org/biosecurity

When you ask most horse owners about controlling infection in their horses they say, “Oh, you mean do I vaccinate and worm my horses?” Certainly immunization of horses with vaccines to prevent or reduce the severity of infectious diseases is a very important part of any infection control plan.
However, owners need to realize that vaccination is only one component of a complete infection control plan for their equine friend; another big part should be focused on reducing or preventing exposure of the horse to infection causing agents. This will surely require more work on the horse owner’s part and will be more difficult to do. But if you're thinking, “is it really necessary?” — we believe the answer is yes. This effort vastly outweighs the cost of treating and possibly hospitalizing a sick horse!
Learn more tips about controlling infection in your horses on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/tips-controlling-infection-your-horses. And as always, your veterinarian remains your best source of information and advice!

Do you know what to do if your horse is choking?
Espophageal obstruction, or “choke,” can look alarming, especially if you've never seen it before. Unlike in human medicine, where choking refers to a tracheal (or windpipe) obstruction, choke in horses refers to an obstruction of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
Most commonly, choking occur when horses eat concentrated feed too quickly without chewing it appropriately, which results in a firm bolus lodged in the animal's esophagus. However, esophageal obstruction can also occur with hay or straw, hard treats, carrots, or nonfood objects. Anatomical problems, such as poor dentition and abnormal esophagus anatomy, can also predispose a horse to choking.
Chokes are common equine emergencies but can have serious consequences; be sure to call your veterinarian as soon as you notice signs of choke. Read more about this condition on our website at https://aaep.org/horsehealth/understanding-choke-horses
