Co-ops operate under a board of directors made of co-op owners. Our board consists of many different community leaders, and we asked them to tell us a little more about themselves and their experience on the board of directors. First up, Kyle Lehman: "Being on the board for Just Local Food has opened my eyes to the wonderful possibilities of supporting local food systems. Growing up on a farm and working with my grandparents, farm-fresh food was apart of my everyday life. When I flew out of my parent's nest I spent some time traveling around the states. I started to notice co-ops in some of the city's I was traveling too. Stopping in to grab some deli food I felt like I was back on the farm. After settling down in Eau Claire, and realizing we had a co-op just a few blocks from my first apartment; I thought I have to be apart of this! Around the same time I started on the board, my wife Lauren started her first season at Sunbow Farms. Since then we have grown to have more appreciation for the land and the food that grows on it. This year we had some extra time off and decided to pick up a new hobby. I picked a fly fishing rod and have been driving around the Northwoods through farmlands and forest looking for the perfect small trout streams to cast a fly. Shopping at JLF lead to applying for the board at JLF and since then it has lead to a new appreciation for our local systems. I'm a proud owner #879!"
Co-op Principle #6 is "Cooperation Among Cooperatives." Earlier this year, we partnered with Menomonie Market Food Co-op to help us with some administrative services. Working together, we learned that we both have strengths in areas with which the other needs a hand. One of Menomonie Market’s strengths is breakfast burritos! We're excited to share that we're now offering a limited number of deli items in our grab n' go case made by Menomonie Market's deli crew, including their sausage (made with Deutsch Family Farm pork) and vegetarian breakfast burritos. Try one out next time you're in. 🌯
Introducing the newest way to save at JLF, Co+op Deals! You may recognize these flyers from other food co-ops you've visited. Our story began in 2004 with a simple goal of providing regular access to locally sourced, organically grown whole foods and natural home products for our families. We started as a worker-owned cooperative with a stand at the Eau Claire Farmer’s Market and home delivery service of Crystal Ball Farms Dairy milk. In late 2012, our Board of Directors voted to become a worker and community-owned cooperative, and in July 2015, we completed the transition to becoming 100% community-owned. We are proud of our roots and thank you all for supporting our co-op through it all. Happy co-op month!
Sno Pac Foods is a fourth-generation family business that grows and preserves fresh fruits and vegetables in Caledonia, MN. The Gengler family started a lumber business in the early 1900s and harvested ice from a spring-fed pond to ship south in the summers. Once refrigeration became available, they built a plant where community members could rent freezer space to store their harvested food. Around the same time, the Genglers bought a farm to grow berries and vegetables that they processed and froze at the plant. Word spread and demand grew for their delicious frozen produce that is still popular in the midwest today. The Geglers say they were "organic before it was cool" because they've always grown their produce without harmful chemicals or fertilizers, and by letting nature thrive.
Meet your board member, Erica Zerr! "I can still remember the first time I laid eyes on the Eau Claire Farmers Market. My husband and I had moved to the city site unseen following a job transfer. We had our tiny, 10-month-old daughter in tow and the pavilion, brimming with produce, cheese, meat, jams, flowers, baked goods and more took our breath away. We had discovered the power of healthy, nourishing food as young people, both of us working our fair share of jobs in Food Co-ops across the Midwest. We experimented with vegetarian, vegan, and raw food diets, trying to align our growing understanding of the industrial food system to our lifestyle. Wisconsin kicked us into an entirely new gear. We both took to the local food journey almost immediately, volunteering and taking jobs on regional farms, working in land and resource conservation, and aligning our understanding of a planet-friend, healthy and holistic diet to the nurturing power of sustainable, grass based, nutrient-dense agricultural practices. Our journey in Eau Claire, over 12 years ago, began with the farmers that supply Just Local Food. They are our friends. Serving them through our purchases, our advocacy, and our cooking has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I am proud to serve on the board of Just Local Food. I believe that nurturing our regional community, through diverse and rugged localism, will solidify people’s love of place, increasing their economic, civic, and communal investment in the fabric of the Chippewa Valley. When not growing, procuring, harvesting, cooking, preserving, and eating (arguably too much) food with my family, I enjoy hiking, fiction, travel, and learning all I can about the field of education."

Another COVID-19 update: Starting on Monday, November 2nd, we will be limiting our open hours to 12:00-6:00pm daily. They are students and parents, some work other jobs, and they are bringing passion and heart to the co-op every day during what is a very difficult time. We are taking this step in order to properly give people time to quarantine or wait for test results if they need to and keep everyone safe. We are so happy to announce that we were chosen as the winner of Downtown Eau Claire's Downtown Improvement Grant this cycle! 🥳 If you've shopped our frozen foods section, you probably noticed we have to keep our extra products on the top shelf of the freezers in-store. Adding a walk-in freezer means we will be able to offer more local foods, order more from our current farmers, and welcome new local vendors. We're bursting at the seams because you choose to shop at JLF, which is a pretty great problem to have if you ask us. Downtown Eau Claire February 17 at 9:20 AM · “Adding a walk-in freezer for our back-stock frozen foods will allow us to order more from our current vendors and add even more local vendors to our mix," says Becca Schoenborn, member of the Just Local team. "Having funds to put toward this project means that we can continue working toward expanding our store and becoming the local food hub of Downtown Eau Claire, and we are grateful for that.” Just Local Food (@justlocalfoodcoop) is planning to add freezer space to their store at 1117 S. Farwell St. and DECI is supporting them with a $2,000 Downtown Enhancement Grant. Read the full story here: https://bit.ly/3puY7uQ The next Enhancement Grant application round begins in June and will be focused on projects that enhance the public experience in downtown (i.e. public art, wayfinding, culturally enriching events, etc.).
