Please join me in expressing the most sincerest appreciation to the K9 Cabana staff. Many people don’t realize that our team gives up being with their families for the holiday so we can take care of other people’s fur babies. Although it’s a job we love doing, it is a huge sacrifice. They work tireless hours in all weather conditions, give up spending Christmas morning with their children, get peed on, pooped on, and vomited on but still come to work with a smile on their face and make K9 Cabana a great place to be. I am so grateful for the entire team that makes the sacrifice at every holiday.

Hi, Larry Fine with K9 Cabana here with another Training Tip Tuesday. Today I'm going to explain Behavior Capture. When having dogs perform commands or tricks, we generally start with a word and then get an action. Behavior capture works the opposite way, from action to word. So when we observe a behavior, we can then label it. It's great for reinforcing already learned commands on a natural basis. It can also be used to turn certain actions into tricks on command if the dog has a natural tendency towards a behavior. For example, some dogs get excited when the leash comes out and spin around. You could say "spin" as the dog is doing it and then it will transfer to a fun trick. I've gotten dogs to spin, roll over, and even throw a ball through behavior capture.
Realizing that we can encourage behavior based on the capture, we have to be careful not to label unwanted behavior. When a dog jumps up, a lot of people will say "no jump" as the dog has their paws on our chest. The problem here is that the dog is in the act of jumping so when we say "no jump," the dog actually associates that phrase with the action. In that case, when we say "no jump," a dog may actually think they should jump.
Take advantage of reinforcing the desired behaviors and have fun with this, it may produce some cool new tricks. Tune in next week for another great tip. Thanks for reading and enjoy your day!

At K9 Cabana, our group leaders are here to ensure that all the dogs are enjoying themselves during their play sessions as well as playing appropriately. Group play should be both balanced and intermittent. Nonstop play, without breaks, often results in dogs becoming over-stimulated. When dogs become over-stimulated, they are more likely to react inappropriately or provoke the other dogs. Our group leaders are trained to recognize the signs of over-stimulation as well as other unwanted behaviors during play. It is the responsibility of the group leaders to allow the dogs to play but step in when they begin to see these unwanted behaviors, like over-stimulation, to prevent any issues. We encourage the dogs by praising them when they are playing appropriately as well as when they take breaks on their own. We are committed to having dogs who engage in proper play no matter where they are!

~Meet & Greets~
We encourage our new clients to take advantage of our meet and greet option. A meet and greet is a free day of daycare for any new dog who has not been to our resort before. It allows the dogs to get acquainted to our environment, meet our staff, and help us to identify your dog’s play style and find the best suited play mates. The meet and greet day also gives us the opportunity to figure out what makes your dog most comfortable so when they are at our resort their accommodations are exactly as they should be. Even if you are a recurring client adding a new dog to your pack, their first day is still free! Please take advantage of it!

~Ambassador Dogs~
Many times our clients hear us reference an “ambassador dog.” So, what exactly is an ambassador dog? These are dogs who demonstrate a multitude of good behaviors. They are non-reactive dogs who can encourage shy dogs to come out if their shell, or they can teach a young dog how to play properly. They tend to initiate play without being pushy but also know when group is getting too stimulated and use their social cues to calm the group. Our goal is for all of our dogs to become ambassador dogs, and every time they are here, we work toward achieving this.
