While our friends at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts have been closed to the public, they kindly opened their doors to a few of our amazing ambassador animals. These animals enjoyed the enrichment they would normally experience while in our shows and on visits to the community. We hope you enjoy this video as much as we did making it!

Each year, Polar Bear Week coincides with the fall polar bear migration near Churchill, Manitoba - where polar bears gather to wait for freeze-up on Hudson Bay so they can return to hunting seals. It focuses on the importance of sea ice to polar bears and why we must take action on climate change to ensure their survival. This year’s Polar Bear Week will offer more ways for you to get involved from home! Watch Kansas City Zoo's social media channels starting this Sunday for easy daily challenges that will help our environment and enter you into a chance to win a daily prize. Enter all five days for a chance to win a Nest programmable thermostat! Our Zoo is proud to be the home of two polar bear ambassadors - longtime resident Berlin and soon-to-be-introduced Nuniq - and to be a partner of Polar Bears International, which is helping wild polar bears and their Arctic habitat. We hope you'll follow along with us Nov. 1 - 8 to learn more about our polar pals and how you can make a difference!
Kansas City Zoo AAZK Chapter October 25 at 12:01 AM · Happy International Gibbon Day! Gibbons are among the rarest of the primates, and are mostly arboreal, moving very quickly from branch to branch in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They make loud, musical sounds that carry over long distances—something that is always fun to hear during a visit to the zoo! Like many animals, Gibbons are becoming more threatened as their forested habitat is destroyed, making breeding efforts with this species more important than ever before! In this video you can see little Leilani, born in February of this year, playing with her father, Smithers, while mother Kit keeps an eye on things. They are Northern white cheeked gibbons. Notice the adult males (like Smithers) are black and white, while adult females are cream colored. Infants are the same color as the mother, and gradually turn black. Then, when young females reach maturity they change back to the cream color like Kit. You can find our little family unit in the Tropics building, sharing a habitat with our Asian small clawed otters!
To ensure that all Zoo employees have sufficient time to cast their ballots, the Zoo will be closing to the public at 3 pm on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. “We feel its extremely important that all of our staff have the opportunity to make their voices heard at the polls,” said Randy Wisthoff, Executive Director/CEO. “We hope that all registered voters in our community are planning to do the same!”
We have another mouth to feed! Nuniq, our new four-year-old polar bear, is still growing and eats approximately 26,000 calories every day! The cost to feed this 1,100-pound bear is $50 each day, a whopping $18,250 per year. Will you help us feed Nuniq? A contribution of $50 or more will get your name posted on the monitors at Polar Bear Passage until February 28, 2021.

TUE, NOV 24 AND 8 MORE Zoosdays!
Good morning! I’m Rosie the #goat and I’ll be taking over the Zoo’s stories today! I’m one of the 'Amazing Animal Ambassadors' that call the Kansas City Zoo home. I was born at the #KCZoo last February. That’s me next to my mom - The Kansas City Chiefs fan since day 1! As a young #ambassadoranimal, I have spent a lot of time learning different behaviors and exploring the Zoo with my trainers. This is so that I can get used to being around lots of people and seeing all sorts of animals and exhibits. You may see me walking all over the zoo when you visit - I especially like to play on the rocks outside of the brand-new #ElephantExpedition that opened this past summer. #rosiethegoat #kansascityzoo
Check out Nuniq! YOUTUBE.COM KC Zoo Polar Bear Cam - YouTube
What a beautiful day to walk the path to our renovated, Elephant Expedition! You can observe not three, not four – but SEVEN African elephants in their new and improved habitat that opened this past summer. You can even check out a virtual keeper chat with this QR code! Can you tell I’m a big fan of elephants? #rosiethegoat
Well, it’s time for my massage appointment so I'm signing off for the day! Make sure to follow #Rosiethegoat and I on our adventures throughout the #KCZoo- you never know where we’ll pop up next! #Rosie&Evie #eviethehog #redriverhog #beauty #nofilter #kansascityzoo
My snout isn’t just cute as a button – it gives me an excellent sense of smell that I use when I’m foraging for food like roots, fruit, and nuts. I’m a #foodiebynature, really. #eviethehog #kansascityzoo #ambassadoranimal
Like #Rosiethegoat, I go on walks throughout the Zoo. In the wild, red river hogs are found throughout western and central Africa. In our Amazing Animal Ambassador Show, I usually show off my sense of smell. #eviethehog #kansascityzoo #nomakeup #ambassadoranimal
While I explore the Zoo, I try to make sure I vary my travels. My walks are not only fun and enriching to me, but to everyone I visit! Enrichment is what animal care staff does to encourage our animals to exhibit natural behaviors (like rooting around the wood chips!) We get daily enrichment to keep our physical and mental health at peak performance. Our Zookeepers really get creative- they offer our food in different ways, give us toys to play with, different scents, training sessions - the list goes on and on. I even get requests from all over the Zoo to provide social enrichment to the animals by walking past their exhibits. This photo is from when I decided to stroll over to visit Berlin polar bear last week. If you're feeling punny, caption this photo! #Evieredriverhog #ambassadoranimal #enrichment
Thank you to everyone who has donated to help offset the expenses of feeding Nuniq! Did you know he eats over 26,000 calories per day?

Give a gift to the animals with our Giving Tree! Animal enrichment is vitally important to our animals’ wellbeing as it allows them to utilize their natural abilities and helps keep them physically and mentally stimulated. They need novel treats for training, strong smells for olfactory acuity, and interesting visuals for variety, plus very sturdy toys. The Giving Tree is filled with items that our animal care staff could use to provide the best quality care for our animals. While some of the items our zookeepers have requested may seem odd, they serve an important purpose. For example, our tigers and other carnivores investigate cologne and perfume when marking their habitat territory. Non-toxic bubble bath is fun for play; canned meats and condiments provide interesting items to taste. Contributions of items on this list help us to enrich the lives of the more than 1,700 animals in our care. Purchases can be dropped off at Guest Relations or shipped to Kansas City Zoo at 6800 Zoo Drive, Kansas City, Missouri 64105. Thank you for supporting KCZoo! KANSASCITYZOO.ORG www.kansascityzoo.org
Two, Too Cute! We recently welcomed two sand cat kittens to first-time mom, Alya! During their routine neonatal exams, we discovered we have one girl and one boy! They are now 6 weeks old, weigh just over 1 pound, and are healthy and very active. They are great climbers and play a lot with each other and with their mom. They love to chase her tail! They are starting to nibble at solid food but are still nursing. Sand cats’ conservation status is “least concern” as their numbers are believed to be stable in their native habitat of Northern Africa. These cuties are still behind the scenes due to the colder temperatures, but we’ll keep you updated! Video: Meredith, zookeeper
Our animals are getting into the holiday spirit! Zookeepers made the season a little brighter with fun gingerbread house themed enrichment for our tigers, langurs and red panda.
If you would like to contribute directly to the animals with a special gift of enrichment, check out our Giving Tree! It’s a wish list of enrichment items that provide mental stimulation and physical exercise for the animals, as well as items that can help animal care staff provide optimal care for the animals. Rosie has requested some unused tires to jump on and Evie has requested giant boxes to destroy. If you’d like to check out the animals’ wish lists, visit https://www.kansascityzoo.org/fyi/giving-tree #kansascityzoo #rosiethegoat #eviethehog #rosieandevie

Nikita will soon leave North Carolina Zoo for his new home at Utah's Hogle Zoo. The Kansas City Zoo wishes him well on his travels! Utah's Hogle Zoo January 22 at 6:16 PM · Hi friends! Boy do we have some BIG polar bear news for you. First of all, as a member of the Assoc. of Zoos and Aquariums, we work closely with the Species Survival Plan, or SSP. The SSP functions like a massive computer dating system for zoo animals, pairing up strong genetic matches with other animals in its database. This ensures a genetically diverse population in zoo animals. So, the time has come when we need to say goodbye to five-year-old Hope. She’ll be going to an accredited zoo in the Midwest to be a part of their breeding program and hopefully contribute healthy cubs to this critically endangered species. What does that mean for Hogle Zoo? NIKITA! Great big, male polar bear, Nikita, ‘Nik,’ will be heading to Hogle Zoo from North Carolina. And by big, we mean big! The 15 year-old male clocks in between 1,200 – 1,300 pounds – twice the size of Hope, who weighs just over 600 pounds. “Nikita is a big and loveable goofball,” said Nicole Pepo, who worked with Nikita in North Carolina. “He enjoys playing with toys (sometimes he breaks them), taking naps in the sun and rolling in the dirt. He’s a very intelligent boy and loves to learn new things. He also isn’t shy about telling his keepers what treat he likes with huffs and head-bobs.” When Nik is standing on his hind legs, he is 10 1/2 ft. tall! Nik loves training and his favorite treat? Peanut butter and grape jelly! After Nikita gets here safely, he’ll be in a quarantine for 30 days; a standard procedure that allows our veterinary team time to give him a thorough check up. Zoo guests should look to see Nikita in the early spring. Sweet Nora will be making a move of her own toward the beginning of March, we’ll share those details as soon as we can. Hogle Zoo has a long standing commitment to polar bears. Through our partnership with Polar Bears International (PBI), we have contributed both funding and staff support to ensure the survival and preservation of this important and critically endangered species. For more information on PBI, the Zoo’s work to help save polar bears in the wild or the upcoming International Polar Bear Day on Feb. 27, please visit www.polarbearsinternational.org

It’s National Women’s Month! This March, on #WomenWednesdays, the Kansas City Zoo Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will be featuring women who have made an impact in zoos, aquariums, and conservation. We’re pleased to highlight these women, past and present, who have made enormous contributions to our field. A California native, Denise Verret grew up loving nature and the outdoors but she never imagined that one day the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens would appoint her as its leader. A career in the LA County Parks and Recreation Department led her to the once city-managed Zoo and in 2019, 19 years later, she would become the first African-American director of an The Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited facility. Denise also wants to empower others as a role model. As the first female African-American zoo director of an Association of Zoos and Aquariums institution, she understands it is her responsibility to show other women and minorities that they can succeed in high leadership positions. “Being the first means I won’t be the last,” she said. “I think it’s important for all women of color, women in general, people of color in general, to see people that look like them. That’s very important in order for people to dream, to believe, realize and achieve… . Once you get to this leadership position, it’s important to mentor, to give back and to give others the opportunity to continue to elevate. That’s what I’m committed to doing in this role.” . #nationalwomensmonth #womenofaza #womenofscience #diversityequityinclusion
Friends of the Zoo members are no longer required to make a timed reservation to visit the Zoo. Capacity limits due to social distancing guidelines are still in place, however, and other guests are required to purchase a timed ticket. Why are we making this change? We appreciate the patience of our Friends of the Zoo members during the past year as they've been required to make timed reservations. Along the way, we've learned a lot about the visitation habits of our members and feel confident as to how many reservations to hold back for members on different days and at different times. While capacity limits will remain in place, we are taking those FOTZ member estimates into account and making the appropriate number of tickets available for purchase by others. This is one way we can say thank you to our members and make their visits more hassle-free. Members who are bringing guests can purchase guest tickets at the discounted rate at the Zoo at the time of your visit; reservations are not needed for your guests.

It's #WomensHistoryMonth and all this month on Wednesdays the KCZoo's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee is highlighting women who have made a significant impact in our field. Margaret Thomas "Mardy" Murie (1902-2003) was a naturalist, author, adventurer, and conservationist. Mardy earned the moniker the "Grandmother of the Conservation Movement" and helped in the passage of the Wilderness Act, and was instrumental in creating the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

One year ago today, the Kansas City Zoo closed its doors to the public in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, no one could have foreseen the closure would last for two months, and that the reopened Zoo would look so different. The past twelve months have been a testament to our Zoo staff’s dedication. Due to changes in programming we could no longer provide as well as reduced revenue, many employees were shifted from their normal roles to fill needs in other departments. The entire KCZoo team stepped up and without their hard work and flexibility, we would not have been able to provide a much-needed activity for families in the Kansas City region. We’re looking forward to warmer weather, sunnier days, and lots of memories yet to be made. Thank you for your continued support. We hope to see you at the Zoo soon! It's #WomenWednesday and today the Zoo's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee provides a snapshot of the women who work at the KCZoo. Did You Know: The zoo field nationwide was historically dominated by men - mostly former military. There were basically only two jobs for women- secretary or working in the nursery with “zoo babies”. According to a workplace survey conducted in 2000 by the American Association of Zoo Keepers, at least 75 percent of zookeepers across the country now are female. Women with advanced science degrees working as curators, nutritionists, researchers, and veterinarians are also now commonplace at zoos. Seventy percent of graduates of veterinary schools each year are women, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. While there is no source that tallies the numbers of women employed as zoo veterinarians, data obtained from seven of the eight US zoos with the highest attendance indicate that most full-time zoo veterinarians and zookeepers, and in most cases curators, are women. So How Does the Kansas City Zoo Stack Up Against These Numbers? - Of the 251 employees at the KC Zoo, 160 are women or 64% - Women work and have leadership roles in all 9 Zoo departments: - Animal Health, Development, Education, Facilities, Finance, Guest Services, Human Resources, Living Collections and Marketing - 60% of management or supervisory roles are held by women. - Women also comprise 55% of our executive team and 50% of the FOTZ Board of Directors. - The Living Collections and Animal Health departments have the most employees. women make up 75 of the 99 employees or 76% - Some of the positions held by these women are: Animal Keeper, Registered Veterinary Technician, Animal Care Manager, Animal Health Records Manager, Animal Curator, Veterinarian, and Conservation Manager. - Female zookeepers are charged with the care of every species of animal in the Zoo. - Many of women who work at the Kansas City Zoo earned degrees. They include DVM, PhDs, MS, BS, AS, and numerous certifications in their fields. - A majority of our zookeepers hold four-year degrees. The next time you are buying a ticket, checking out at the gift shop, visiting an animal exhibit, or being greeted or being offered final goodbye, it might be by one of the AMAZING WOMEN who work for The Kansas City Zoo! Stay tuned next week as we introduce some of them to you.
