The loss of a great actor and human, Chadwick Boseman weighs on me this Monday morning. Lost too young to colorectal cancer, a potentially preventable disease and curable when treated early. He was only 43. When diagnosed, he was stage 3, and later progressed to stage 4. Colorectal cancer is rising among people under age 50. Black men and women are also at higher risk. If you are between age 40-45, even if you have no symptoms or family history, please talk to your doctors about screening for colorectal cancer. The @americancancersociety has recommended screening begin at age 45 among average risk individuals. If you are considered high risk, you may need to start earlier. #colorectalcancer #colorectalsurgery #colorectalcancerawareness #rectalcancer #coloncancer #preventcancer #curecancer #rectalbleeding #cedarssinai
Colorectal cancer rates rising among young people. Previously making up less than 5% colorectal cancers, now 12 % of colorectal cancers occur among those under 50. Many of our clinical trials are up and running again and that makes me 😀. Why? You ask? Clinical research gives me a platform for creative thinking, science, and an opportunity to provide options for patients who have failed or don’t meet criteria for standard treatments! Some of our current studies focus on 1. the surgical treatment of #rectalcancer 2. treatment response to #chemoradiation in #rectalcancer 3. #stemcells for #crohnsdisease #analfistula 4. #ulcerativecolitis #jpouchsurgery functional outcomes Just to name a few! In 2018 the American Cancer Society recommended that colorectal cancer screening begin at age 45 due to the increasing rate of young-onset colorectal cancer. In October 2020, the United States Preventative Services Task Force followed to extend this same recommendation. This is big, since most insurance companies follow the guidelines set by the USPSTF. What does this mean for you? 1. If you are 45 or older and average risk, ie no family history or personal history of symptoms, talk to your doctor about colorectal cancer screening this year. 2. If you are younger and healthy, start learning about your family history. Your doctors may recommend a colonoscopy at a younger age if you have a family history of polyps or cancer. 3. If you see having any symptoms such as Rectal bleeding, bloating, pain, or new diarrhea or constipation, talk to your doctors as these may be signs that warrant colonoscopy evaluation. #colonoscopy #colorectalcancer #coloncancer #screeningforcoloncancer #cologuard #rectalbleeding #colorectalsurgery #colorectalsurgeon
Cologuard is a stool testing kit for detection of colorectal cancer. You probably saw their commercial during #superbowl and thought 🧐. The cute character is catchy and it’s true that the test has a high cancer detection rate. But they leave out a key fact. They don’t tell you that only 42% of advanced precancerous polyps are detected with this test. More and more people are asking for stool testing for colon cancer screening, especially during the pandemic. When used appropriately Cologuard is a decent test to rule out colon cancer. But It does not compare to colonoscopy, which finds the smallest polyps, and removes them so the don’t become cancer. Nobody wants a test that tells you you have cancer. Also, the scare when you have a positive test - but it’s a false negative. That wait to get a colonoscopy to confirm the results is torture for patients. If you want a test that prevents cancer, ask your doctor about getting a colonoscopy. #cologuard #colonoscopy #coloncancerscreening #fuckcancer #coloncancerawareness #coloncleanse
