The journey to America is different for everyone. This is my story. This is a photo of my beautiful mother and I. Taken in Vietnam before we escaped. After the fall of Saigon, my family escaped from Vietnam by boat. Yes, I am a “boat person”. We landed in Malaysia and stayed at a refugee camp. From Malaysia, we then went to a refugee camp in the Philippines. Finally arriving in America in 1983. Not everyone who escapes Vietnam, made it. Many drowned or were captured, killed and raped by pirates. I don’t remember the journey because I was a toddler at the time. But each time my parents retell the story, I learn more about it. I am an example of what the American dream is all about. Every day I am grateful my parents made the decision to give me this opportunity.
