COVID β 19 Updated Policies and Procedures
Dear clients,
We will be instating a new COVID-19 policy effective Monday September, 21. We are asking for everyoneβs cooperation and will require all clients to adhere to the following rules:
- We will only be allowing curbside service. NO CLIENTS ARE ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING. This policy is not up for discussion. We are doing our best to keep our staff safe so that we can continue to remain open to help our patients and clients.
- If you or anyone in your household has been exposed to the coronavirus or is feeling ill please reschedule your appointment.
- You will need to remain in your car and call our office upon arrival for all matters. Our front door will be locked, please do not knock or try to come into the building.
- Once a receptionist checks you in your technician will call you in regards to your appointment.
-If you reach our voicemail, please leave a message as our receptionists are checking messages constantly due to a high call volume.
- A staff member will go out to your car to retrieve your pet and will bring them into the building for their appointment. (Please have your pet on a leash or in a carrier)
- The veterinarian who saw your pet for their appointment will then call you to discuss.
- Payment is to be given over the phone at time of service.
- We ask that you remain in your car in our parking lot with your phone on during the appointment as this is our only way of communicating with you about your pet.
- If your pet is coming to us for boarding please call us upon arrival. A staff member will discuss with you what your animals boarding needs are and will then bring your animal into the hospital.
-When you are picking up medications/food please call upon arrival, we will ask you to pay over the phone and a staff member will bring the item to your car. Please utilize our online website for medication and food as well.
-When bringing injured wildlife you are to fill out a wildlife form (located on a table outside the front door) once filled out please call us. Once there is an available staff member they will come out to receive the animal. We are only able to take injured wildlife.
We will be taking these recommended steps to keep our staff and clients safe during this time. Please be patient with us as we are doing the best we can during this difficult time.

Please welcome Monique as out newest staff member!
Monique started out with us in 2012 as a boarding specialist and receptionist. She now works with us as a full-time veterinary technician. Monique has always had a great passion for all animals. She has worked with animals since 2008 and was certified in dog grooming in 2017.
She shares her home with her Dalmatian, Otis, her two Great Danes, Little Foot and Bellatrix, her two sphynx cats, Winston and Mookie, her Rhino Iguana, Guana, her Burmese python, Meatball, and her two tarantulas.
In her free time, she is a manager for a local non-profit farm rescue called the Riley Farm Rescue, which is home to over 160 animals that she loves like her own. She is a member of CT Votes for Animals, Bailing out Benji and a vegan mentor for PETA.
Monique loves working at KBAH because it is like a family and every single person here loves animals as much as she does. She also loves being able to work with the exotics and wildlife. Monique loves spending time hiking with her dogs and her husband, playing music and doing yoga
Millie was recently diagnosed with a cruciate tear. Yesterday she began her first laser therapy session with us!
Laser therapy will decrease the inflammation of her knee and will also accelerate her healing process.
Contact us for more information and to discuss if laser therapy is the right treatment for your pet!
Honoring all who served. Thank you πΊπΈ

Cote DeRota is at Kensington Bird & Animal Hospital.
November 6 at 1:55 AM Β· Berlin, CT Β·
The βAmerican Cootβ is a chicken-sized water/marsh bird that can be found across North America. It is most commonly found in CT during the winter months. These birds can be found in many fresh water habitats from ponds and swamps to large lakes and eat a variety of aquatic plants along with insects, tadpoles and small fish. The American Coot is well known for its loud squawking calls and extremely aggressive nesting behaviors, donβt try to get near their nest or babies! Both the male and female work together to build a floating platform nest in the water made of cattails and other plants & debris. Although listed as a species of βlow concernβ, studies have found their numbers declining especially in the East. The strange webbing structures on their feet allow them to not only push through water, but also helps maneuver them on a huge variety of terrain from solid ground to ice sheets or extremely muddy areas.
This Coot was found grounded in a church parking lot and brought in to KBAH for treatment. The only injury found was a neck laceration most likely caused by a predator of some kind. Weβre hoping to get this strange looking but incredible bird back to the wild soon with the help of a licensed rehabber! The first 2 photos are from today in the hospital while the last 2 show Coots in their natural habitat!
We will be closed Monday, February 1 due to the snow storm. We plan to resume our normal business hours on Tuesday 2/2. Please stay safe and warm!

Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV)
January 22 at 11:25 AM Β·
Birds have one of the most complex respiratory systems of all animal groups. Upon inhalation, 75% of the fresh air bypasses the lungs and flows directly into a posterior air sac which extends from the lungs and connects with air spaces in the bones and fills them with air. The other 25% of the air goes directly into the lungs. When the bird exhales, the used air flows out of the lungs and the stored fresh air from the posterior air sac is simultaneously forced into the lungs. Thus, a bird's lungs receive a constant supply of fresh air during both inhalation and exhalation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird
