Do you have rules in your house? We're assuming you have at least some.. Did you come up with them or did your kids?
Teacher Tom explains to us how there's power in kids coming up with their own rules, or as he calls them - agreements. Instead of having to say "no hitting, no taking things from others" you can instead remind them of what we agreed on together which is so much more effective.
This excerpt comes from a video where Teacher Tom unpacks the power of information statements and how they stop children from simply responding to us as adults and instead encourage them to think for themselves. It will challenge you to think through all your language habits and come up with new ways of enagaging with kids. Definitely worth checking out!

“Often, people use the words ‘tolerance’ and ‘acceptance’ when they talk about respect. These are important, but respect means more than just tolerating or accepting a person. Respecting someone means that you value that person for their contributions to society, your community, or the group.”

Do your kids experience meltdowns? They are slightly different to tantrums and it's important to understand what the triggers are. #parenttv

Did you know there was a difference between tantrums and meltdowns?
In this video, Allison Davies (ParentTV expert, music therapist and sensory expert) discusses common triggers for meltdowns in children but it's important to not get confused between meltdowns and tantrums. Tantrums are age appropriate and it's usually a conscious behaviour but a meltdown means there's something else going on for your child.. it's important to know the difference because it impacts how you respond and how you can help your child.
If you want to understand more about the difference between the two, check out this video from Allison Davies - Music and the Brain: https://parenttv.com/videos/the-difference-between-tantrums-and-meltdowns/

This is powerful! We really need to consider other options for our kids instead of "time out". #parenttv

Are you still putting your kids in 'time out'?
This is not about judgement..truly! A lot of the way we parent comes from our experiences as children (more on this below) and experts for years have been telling us that time out works BUT the latest research and advice actually indicates the opposite. In fact, when time out is used as a punishment, not only is it ineffective but it can also lead to a range of negative outcomes.
We've got a whole video on time out and why it's not effective from Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families but thankfully - he also unpacks what you can do instead. Check it out here: https://parenttv.com/videos/why-time-out-doesnt-work/
