January 30th – 4:30 p.m
Winter Storm Warning and Coastal Flood Watch in effect
Based on latest guidance today, forecasted snow totals being increased
Snow will begin from southwest to northeast across New Jersey Sunday afternoon and evening, likely reaching Neptune/Monmouth County around 4:00 p.m. Snow accumulations by sunrise Monday morning now expected to be 3 to 6 inches.
There is likely to be a period of lighter precipitation on Monday. This lighter precipitation could be sleet or rain along the immediate coastal sections of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Snow continues across inland areas. On Monday afternoon, the maturing coastal low will create a band of heavier precipitation. Any areas that change to sleet or rain will likely go back to snow and snow will continue into Monday evening.
There is a good deal of spread among the forecasting models as to when the lull is precipitation may occur. Some are more towards Monday afternoon. In addition, the ending time for the snow is up for debate. Some guidance ends things Tuesday morning while others continue snow through the day on Tuesday (more on the lighter side) which potential would make this a 48 hour event. Should be able to pin this part of the forecast down a bit better tomorrow.
Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are likely in Neptune and the immediate coastal towns of Monmouth and northern Ocean Counties.
Inland sections of Monmouth County and Ocean County as well as the remainder or central NJ, northern NJ and the NYC area, interior southern NJ and Philly….10 to 16 inches of snow is likely.
Travel will be difficult for much of the day on Monday and into Monday night
Northeast winds will gust to 45 mph by Monday morning. Northeast wind gusts of near 50 mph are possible on Monday and Monday night. Winds will gradually back to north-northeast winds and then north later Monday and Monday night.
Coastal flooding is likely with the potential for areas of moderate coastal flooding at the Monday high tides around 9:30 a.m. and again at 10:30 p.m. This will cause street flooding in low lying areas normally prone to coastal flooding. At this time, the morning high tide looks to be the highest as winds should have a more northerly component by Monday evening and the astronomical tide is a bit lower.
Stay tuned for further updates over the remainder of the weekend.
Looks like we may have some snow!
