This week's topic for #DermMythMonday covers the myth that lemon juice lighten dark spots. Dermatologists recommend things of plant-based products. Lemon juice is not one of them. In fact, lemon-and other citrus fruits can darken the skin.
This rash is called phytophotodermatitis, literally meaning plant + sun = inflamed skin. Chemical compounds in lemons can interact with sunlight -and significantly irritate the skin causing a dark discoloration.

Today's #dermmyth covers the myth that bumps and neck irritation is caused by unclean barber clippers. The bumps are Acne Keloidalis Nuchae also known as AKN. #AKN is inflammation of the hair follicle that is quickly followed by scars. The scars may turn into keloid-like growths. It can be disfiguring at painful and tends to affect black men more than other groups. Barbers typically use an antimicrobial that effectively kills the bacteria Staphylococcal Aureus (or Staph for short)Acne Keloidalis (aka Acne Keloidalis Nuchae, or AKN).
While many believe the AKN is caused by "dirty clippers." Please, let's stop blaming our licensed #barbers. AKN is also associated with friction against the back of the neck from tight collars and helmets; and trauma from shaving or short haircuts.

Today's #DermMythMonday covers a major myth that it is okay to call your doctor a "provider. " Calling your doctor a provider is a professional insult.
Dr. Niran Al-Agba, a pediatrician in Washington state, wrote an article educating me on the origin of using the term "provider" in place of "doctor" or "physician." I've never liked being called a provider because the term dismissed the years spent in medical school and training. It turns out the origin of the term is more atrocious than I imagined.
The term "provider" was first used by the Third Reich--- yes, the Nazis--- to belittle and systematically humiliate Jewish doctors as medical professionals.

Today's #DermaMyth is an all-time fav, Castor Oil for Hair Loss. Overall #castoroil is not harmful. Castor oil is extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis and used as emulsifying agents and surfactants in many skin/ hair care products. Castor oil has been used in various rituals worldwide for millennia and is generally well tolerated with only a few cases of allergic contact dermatitis (allergic skin reaction) in the medical literature. Thus, I see no issue with my patients applying castor oil to their hair.
There is a case of a patient who applied castor oil and #coconutoil and soon after trying to wash it out developed severe tangles resembling a bird's nest. Not sure if the problem was the combination of the coconut oil and castor oil, just the coconut oil, or something the patient omitted from the story.
At this time, there is no scientific evidence that castor oil reverses hair loss or causes hair growth.
