This story highlights the importance of how emergency calls are answered, something we’ve been singularly focused on for the past 32 years. Knowing the address of a caller is not only important but is required by ASME A 17.1. In fact, those answering the emergency phones need to be able ID the caller's location without any help from the caller at all. This is really just the beginning of keeping your tenants/passengers safe.
Tennessee's rule mandating signage within commercial elevators indicating the building's address is a nice additional measure to act as a fail-safe, especially for scenarios when an elevator phone may be broken and the passenger may need to dial 911 from their cell phone as an alternative. However, as always, we encourage regular proper testing of your elevator phone to ensure it is up to code-- including location identification ability. It's as simple as activating a call and asking the operator if they can tell you where you're located. You can learn more about testing your phone at go.kingsiii.com/test.
